"Conflict unraveled…Fixing Problems at Work and in Families" by Andra Medea The first sentence of the preface…"Conflicts baffle everyone!!" says it all! How very true! No one goes through life unscathed from conflict. The trick, states the author, is learning to deal with it in a positive, productive manner. Ms. Medea offers concrete examples of the "correct" and "incorrect" ways to confront conflict. The book offers common sense, practical information to help all of us deal with the myriad conflicts of daily life. This is a logical, step by step, "how-to" solution to the ever present problem of conflict in our lives. Each chapter ends with a section called "What to Remember". This seems to be a great way to summarize what the chapter was trying to teach us; for the reader, it highlights the important aspects discussed in that particular chapter. This is followed by a section called "What Works Where". In chart format, it gives the reader a map of what conflict resolution techniques work in which instance. Sprinkled throughout are various pictures and drawings to define the points explored. The bibliography offers the reader extra references; an index serves to simplify a reader's search for a particular topic. What I found most interesting, was the chart entitled "Conflict Continuum". This had four columns: healthy, unhealthy, dysfunctional, and predatory. Readers can read the profile of each to determine how they resolve conflict. It is a very powerful exercise of self scrutiny and self evaluation; and a great way to begin the process of understanding and change. Whether you use this book for personal reference or pass it on to family and friends or hand it out to employees and co workers, it will certainly be of benefit to each and every one. No one can go through life without conflict, but the way that conflict is handled and resolved will define who you are. Well worth the read, the narrow margins especially the inside ones made it a bit difficult and awkward to read. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Thirty-One Cups of Inspiration by Gerri Smith and Other Distinctive Guest Authors Having recently read this inspirational book, I felt the need to review it for my readers. The author, Gerri Smith, chose a very appropriate title…for each chapter serves as a cup to assuage the thirst for what's best in life and to assist in "stimulating ones thoughts to reach greater heights of achievement"1. The analogy in the title is followed throughout the book. Adding many different beliefs to the inspirations, are contributions by guest "speakers". Putting a different spin on the concepts, these additional authors helped create a most bountiful edition. One of the things I like about this inspirational book is that each of the thirty one chapters is prefaced by an inspirational quote that epitomizes the main idea of the chapter. And then, after the reader has 31 inspirations, she receives a bonus…the greatest money making secret in history; but you will have to read the book to find out what that is!! At one time or another, most of us need the inspirational guidance from a friend or, in this case, a book. It will inspire you to achieve in both business and in personal endeavors. Written in an easy to understand, clearly delineated manner; the only readers who might not find this book appealing are those who prefer not to mix G-d into business. 1.
