Tip of the Month

Standby
If you have a "Standby" button on the front of your cable modem,
and you can't access the Internet, someone may have
inadvertently pushed the button.
If you have your telephone as part of your cable package, or if
you have a separate phone package tied through your cable, and
the phone works, you should be able to also access the Internet.
Before calling the cable company try pushing that button - it
may just solve your problem.
The "Standby" button is a good way to prevent Internet Access
when you are away from your computer, but want to leave the
computer running. Using this will not affect your phone service.

The What, Why and How of Business Blogs
By Jason OConnor (c) 2006, Oak Web Works, LLC
Blog is short for Web Log or Weblog and the Blogosphere is
the online blog world, some parts of which are hyperlinked
extensively to each other.
This is the Wikipedia definition: Blog is short for weblog. A
weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated
and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally
represent the personality of the author or the Web site.
I recommend that you read lots of people's blogs to learn what
blogs are. Go to your favorite search engine and type in the
word 'blog' and the subject you're interested in. For example,
'web design blog', or 'blog music', or 'sports blog'. You'll
find lots of blogs that way.
Blogs have become a way in which regular, non-technical people
can post information to the Web as easily as they can access it.
Why Are Blogs So Important?
Well, they're not that important, yet. But they could be soon,
and most likely will be. In fact, some would argue that they are
already vital in today's Web business world. I am not ready to
agree to that yet, but it is becoming more obvious to me over
time that blogs can no longer be ignored in business.
Online businesses can benefit from blogging by taking advantage
of a vehicle for easily posting new, original, and
business-related content on a regular basis.
Here Are Some More Business Benefits Of Blogging:
* Blogs help to position you and/or your company as experts
and leaders in your industry.
* They're interactive in nature. At the end of each blog entry
is usually a link that allows anyone to add their own comments
to your blog entries. This allows your customers and potential
customers to make comments about your products or services or
ask you questions to help them in their buying process.
* Blogs are marketed easily and quickly by their RSS feeds.
* Blogs allow you to stress your choice of products, services,
relevant news stories, quotes, pictures and more with your
audience, customers and potential customers.
* People are generous with adding links to your blog if the
content is good, especially within their own blogs. More
links means more traffic and better search engine rankings.
Here Are Some Ways In Which You Can Make Revenue From Your Blog:
1. Selling advertisements. Whether you use banners or text links,
if your site draws a regular audience interested in your blog
topics or theme, try to offer ad space to organizations that are
looking to market to your audience. In fact, if your blogs
becomes really popular then advertisers will call you.
2. Offering Google's AdSense. Google's website explains,
"Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers
of all sizes to display relevant Google ads on their website's
content pages and earn money." Learn more about AdSense.
3. Affiliate Programs. Affiliate programs allow Web sites that
provide links to your site to receive payments or reciprocal
advertising in exchange for promoting your Web site. In the case
of blogging, this is reversed, where you post links within your
blog, and collect money from the owners of those links when they
result in a click-through and sale.
Here Are Some Websites Where You Can Get Your Blog Listed:
* BlogWise - http://www.blogwise.com
* Blog Search Engine - http://www.blogsearchengine.com
* Blog Hub - http://www.bloghub.com
* Blog Daisey - http://www.blogdaisey.com

How To Blog For Business:
First you need to get blogging software. You can choose to
create a blog that is housed on another site such as
http://www.blogger.com (which is a blog service) or you can
host it on your own Web server. I recommend the latter since
the links that are developed by others pointing to your blog
won't be counted in the search engines. This is because the
links are attributed to domains, so a link to
http://MyNewBlog.blogger.com gives a link credit to
blogger.com and not your domain.
If your blog is a business blog, you really ought to host your
own blog as opposed to using a blog service. You'll need the
extra functionality and control.
If you plan on hosting your own blog and if you plan to use a
UNIX Web server platform, then you need to go with blogging
software such as Movable Type, for example. If you have a
Microsoft Web server platform for your site, then you'll need
software such as BetaParticle blog. Here is a great list of
various blog software: http://www.lights.com/weblogs/tools.html
Next you'll need a database to hook your blog up to. The
database is what stores the blog entries, among other things. If
you don't know if you have a database on or connected to your
website server, or if you don't know how to hook up your blog to
your database, contact your host company or Web server
administrator for help.
Once you have the blog set up on your domain (for example
http://www.MyWebsite.com/blog) and you've hooked it up to a live
database, you can start blogging. Generally, each entry is also
a day. So you can write a new entry every day, or whenever you
want, and that entry will show up on the blog at the top, moving
older entries below.
You ought to think of a theme for your blog. In other words, your
blog could be about your personal experiences in the industry
you're in. It could be about your company's product reviews, or
new services. It could be about your thoughts and opinions about
issues related to your industry. It could be a place where you
regularly find and list new resources to help others in your
industry. The list is endless. But be sure to stick to a theme
and be original. You want to offer something of value to your
website visitors.
Sticking to a theme helps you position yourself for future
advertisers and also makes for better reading for your visitors.
Furthermore, you want to give a good impression with your blog
with each and every entry if you want it to augment your online
business. Finally, sticking to a theme helps with the search
engines since it's believed that engines determine website
themes and use this information for ranking.
Of course your blog could be about personal things too. Many
blogs are just that, an online journal. But since we're
interested in Web business here, I am discussing business blogs
only.
What's great is that blogs get indexed easily and quickly by
search engines. Each entry is another "page" that can be
potentially listed in Google for example, which will drive more
traffic to your site.
Another neat thing about running a blog once it's set up is that
you do not need to be technical at all to make regular entries.
This is helpful if you want to delegate the writing to someone
else, since technical skills won't be a prerequisite. This
allows you to have the most qualified person regarding the
blog's theme and, hopefully the best writer, actually making the
entries.
Be creative. Add images to your blog entries to spice things up a
bit. Although blogging can be lonely, keep at it. Sometimes it
seems like you're just writing new entries each day for yourself
only. It may be a while before someone chooses to add a comment
to one of your entries. You may not hear from anyone for a long
time. But that doesn't mean people aren't reading it. In fact,
check your website statistics to see just how many people are
visiting your new blog. As you add more entries, get your blog
listed on other sites and market your blog. It will build, and
eventually you'll have a nice following of engaged readers.
Most importantly, be sure to pepper your entries with calls to
action. For example, if your business blog is attached to your
travel website and the blog's theme is traveling and finding
great travel deals all over the world, make sure you add a link
to an entry that points people to a travel special you're
running on your website. What would be even better is a blog
entry about the fantastic vacation you took to Hawaii and
included at the end was a link to cheap Hawaii vacation deals on
your website.

Internet Tip of the Week: If you hate AOL
by Bob Osgoodby
If you hate AOL
Or, if you like it, entrepreneurs and marketers can learn
something from their latest move. At one point, they had the
lions share of the market. But things have been changing.
AOL was the first internet based ISP and services such as
Prodigy, who had a proprietary system, and were slow to react,
saw their market share plummet. Prodigy, who was one of the
first online services saw their subscriber base dwindle from
over 8 million to just a few hundred thousand.
At this point, AOL doesn't have much of a choice. Its' domestic
subscription count peaked at 26.7 million in the fall of 2002,
but has fallen every single quarter. At this point AOL is down
to just 17.7 million. Like Prodigy, it was too slow to keep up
with changing times. To make up for lost revenue, they failed
their faithful subscribers by doing away with many of the
features such as their discussion forums and community leaders.
AOL said it would offer back the old e-mail addresses to the
millions who canceled their service in the past two years and
all email will be free, even for new subscribers. Why you might
ask would they do this. Simple - their primary revenue is from
advertising. The more subscribers (free or paid) they have, the
more they can charge their advertisers.
But is it too little too late? Time will tell.
Anyone in business, whether it be "online" or "brick and
mortar," must pay attention to changes that are occurring. They
must also pay attention to what their competitors are doing. Now
does this mean you continually change your approach or your
advertising? No.
The change that AOL is making is drastic. Most people don't
react well to sudden changes, and this very well could signal
the end of them as the dominant ISP.
If you feel it is necessary to institute changes to keep current
with your competition or the changing marketplace, your changes
should be implemented gradually. Like in the supermarket, people
get used to where things are and continue to shop there because
they know where everything is. It is really upsetting to many
shoppers when they go to the store one day, and find that
everything has been moved. They are no longer comfortable with
the store, and are a prime candidate at that point for changing
stores.
If the supermarket wished to change their layout for whatever
reason, if they did it in small steps and made the changes over
a number of months, it wouldn't be as traumatic to their
customers.
I usually recommend a five year plan. Where do you want your
business to be five years from now? What steps must you take to
get there? If you see that change is necessary, and you do have
a good business plan, change can be implemented gradually. This
way you don't run the risk of losing your existing customer
base.

Women in Business 6 Secrets To Preventing Email Overload
by Donna Gunter
I wonder now who was the genius who said email would make our
lives easier? Don't you want to strangle this person on some
days??
I've found email to be both a blessing and a curse. I love the
immediacy of the communication, but hate all of the spam and
viruses that I have to be vigilant about.
So, here's 6 quick tips that I use to help me better manage my
email:
1. The rule of handling email is the same as handling paper
correspondence. Only handle it once. When you've read it, decide
at that point to delete it, answer it, or file it for later
action. Don't let you email inbox grow to 1000 or more
messages--that becomes incredibly overwhelming and drains too
much energy from you every day. I receive roughly about 600
pieces of email a day, so if I didn't do something to manage it
properly, I'd be drowning in email.
2. Control your urge to check your email all of the time. I have
my email program set to check email every 4 hours, which is
twice a day for my workday, rather than having the program check
it automatically during the day. I know that many of my clients
will procrastinate on what they need to do by deciding to read
their email rather than to do the pressing items on their to do
lists. Limiting your ability to read your email will result in
getting productivity--I guarantee it!
3. Set up filters (in Eudora) or rules (in Outlook) to
automatically shuffle email into appropriate folders. I have
numerous mailboxes set up in Eudora to house all of the posts of
the discussion lists I belong to or newsletters I receive or
daily correspondence that I get from clients. In many cases, I
have sub-mailboxes set up under my primary mailboxes to further
categorize the email that I receive. I've set these mailboxes up
over time, and in many cases at the point where the email
arrives in my inbox. It may take you 30 or so days to set up
filters or rules for your email, but the effort will be very
worthwhile. Now, when I check email, the mailboxes containing
new mail appear across the bottom of my screen, so I can quickly
eyeball them and figure out what on which emails immediate
action is needed.
4. Be sure that your virus system, firewall system, junk mail
systems are up-to-date. I use Norton for viruses and have it
connected to my email system so that all incoming and outgoing
messages are scanned for viruses. Norton prompts me to update it
regularly. ZoneAlarm, my firewall system, www.zonealarm.com is
up and running whenever I'm online to protect me from any type
of intrusive attacks. Eudora has a built-in junk email detector
system that works relatively well, but I'd prefer that most of
my junk mail never even reach my email program. Consequently, I
use SpamArrest, www.spamarrest.com, which runs $34.95/year. All
of my email goes through SpamArrest before it's downloaded into
Eudora, and I can approve or block certain senders as I see fit.
I log in at the beginning of the day and the end of the day to
see if something was labeled as spam and rescue it, and then
proceed to delete all the spam. Of the 600 emails a day I
receive, I would estimate that at least 400/day are due to spam.
Thanks goodness for SpamArrest!
5. If you're receiving emails via your domain name, like
yourname@yourdomainname.com, and the email address is set up as
a POP3 account, log into your web hosting account and be sure
that you're set up only to receive emails at designated email
addresses. Many times spammers will send emails out to
postmaster@ or webmaster@ or info@, as these are pretty common
email address aliases. If your hosting email account has an
address that is set up to receive all the email to the bogus
aliases (unrouted email) , you'll be getting lots of spam.
Instead, log in to your hosting account and set your default
email address to :blackhole: or to :fail: No Such User Here so
that you'll only get the email at the addresses you've created.
6. Never put your email address on your website. Spammers buy
robot or spider programs that scour websites for unecoded email
addresses to add to their spam database. You can use a contact
form where a visitor will have to input information and send the
form data to you, or you can use an email address encoder
program. I like to maintain the ability for my visitors to email
me if they wish, so I use a program called Natata Anit-Spam
Encoder, http://natata.hn3.net/antispam_encoder.htm. I encode
all the email addresses on my websites and those of clients. The
program is free of charge.
You can tame the email beast, but it'll take a little effort and
energy and due diligence to make it all work. Implement these
steps, and you'll stop dreading receiving email.

How to Secure Your Wireless Network
By Debbie Jacobsen
If you use a wireless network, chances are good it is not secure.
If you don't make some important configuration changes on your wireless
router after installing it, your wireless network is wide open to hackers,
curious neighbors and people who would rather use your broadband internet
service instead of buying their own. Several of my neighbors have a
wireless network set up in their home, and from my living room I can
connect to three different networks in addition to my own. I do this
easily, using no special skills, software or equipment. All I do is
click on my wireless networking icon and select "view available wireless
networks". I choose one, click "connect", and in an instant I am using
my neighbor's internet connection instead of my own. Kind of creepy, isn't it?
Following are 6 things you can do to make your wireless network invisible
and impenetrable to the majority of intruders.
Change the default password of your wireless router. This makes it harder
for a would-be intruder to access the router administration controls.
Change the name of your SSID. The SSID (service set identifier) is the name
of your wireless network, and by default is usually the brand name of your
wireless router (like Linksys). Change this to a unique name of your choice.
A good rule of thumb to follow when setting up any type of network is to
always change the default settings to something else, which makes it harder
for an intruder to get in.
Use an encryption key. Most wireless routers have WEP encryption capability
(Wireless Equivalent Protocol), and the newer ones also have WPA
(Wi-Fi Protected Access). WEP is an older standard and less secure
than WPA, so if you have both, choose WPA. Even WEP is probably good enough,
and if this is all you have choose the highest bit encryption possible
(usually 128 bit).
Once you set up encryption on your wireless router, write down the method you
are using as well as the key (a long string of cryptic-looking characters),
because you will need this to set up encryption on each of your computers
that will use the wireless network.
Disable broadcasting of your SSID. By default, the SSID (your wireless
network's name) is broadcast to anyone with a wireless network card. Although
this makes it easy to configure your computers to access your network, it also
makes it easy for outsiders to know about your network. By disabling SSID
broadcast, no one will ever see your network.
Limit the number of IP addresses your wireless router allows on the network.
By default, your wireless router will assign an IP address to as many computers
that request one. If you limit the number of addresses that the router's DHCP
server assigns to just the number that you need, you will "block" all other
computers that try to connect to your network.
Use MAC address filtering. You can configure your wireless router to only allow
certain computers on the wireless network by including each computer's MAC address
in the list of "allowed" users. A MAC address is a unique physical address that
is hard coded onto each network interface card. It is much like a serial number,
as every MAC address is unique.
Find your network card's MAC address by opening up a command prompt and typing
in ipconfig /all. Look for something that says "physical address", and the
series of letters and numbers following this is your MAC address. It will look
something like this: 00-06-5B-CE-DA-B5. Key this information into the wireless
router's MAC address filtering setup under MAC address 1. Repeat this process
for every computer on your network, using MAC address 2, 3, and so on.
In addition to securing your wireless network, there is one more thing you need
to do to make sure your wireless network is safe:
Install a personal firewall on each of the computers on your wireless network.
If an intruder does happen to get into your network, a personal firewall (also
known as a software firewall) will keep him out of your computer. With a personal
firewall running, the most an intruder can do is use your internet connection
and your bandwidth; he will not be able to access your data.

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity

business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting
and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel

so email me anytime and you will receive a personal
reply from me.
And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same. EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income. The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after several years of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
