Don't Quit
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit -
Rest, if you must, but don't quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down
How close he was to the golden crown.

Clear Internet History
Cache files are used to store information on a temporary basis for quick access. The physical location of this can be either on a hard drive or in RAM memory.
The idea behind it is to store information the computer is probably going to need in a location that's quick and easy to access. Since it can get to needed information quicker, the computer runs faster.
Web Pages you have visited lately, are stored in your cache, and that takes up a lot of space. If you empty your cache, keep in mind, that frequently visited pages will take longer to download because they are no longer saved in the History (the browser looks in cache first for images before it downloads).
To clear out the history in Internet Explorer, hit the Tools menu, Internet Options. On the General tab, you'll see a History area. Click the "Clear History" button and you're all set.
For Netscape, hit the Edit menu, Preferences. Under the Navigator section, you'll see a History section. Hit the "Clear History" button and you're all set.
Note that from either Explorer or Netscape you can adjust how long your History files last. So, if you want them cleared out every week, just set it to seven days. If you regularly run Disk Cleanup, this also clears your history.

Phishing Scams Rise Exponentially
Phishing is the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely
claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt
to scam the user into surrendering private information that will
be used for identity theft. According to the annual report from
security firm MessageLabs, the incidence of phishing attacks has
risen exponentially over the past year, posing a serious risk for
businesses or individuals who conduct business online.
According to MessageLabs, which tracks and monitors e-mail,
phishing messages in January 2004 numbered 337,050, but in
November they totaled 4.5 million. As recently as September 2003,
MessageLabs identified fewer than 300 phishing messages in a
month. Phishing scams have also become increasingly
sophisticated, according to the MessageLabs report, preying on
the trust of computer users and fooling some into acting as money
launderers. The report noted that some scams are able to access
online banking information even when users do not click on any
links.
Meanwhile, according to the report, the number of e-mail messages
that include a virus rose to 1 in 16, up from 1 in 33 last year,
and spam now accounts for 73 percent of all e-mail.

Holiday Lethargy
by Bob Osgoodby
With the coming of the holidays, many home based entrepreneurs
are getting caught up in the spirit of the season. Instead of
approaching their business with the same vigor and vitality as
usual, they have dropped their guard a bit, and think they can
coast through the end of the year. They might figure they've got
to buy presents for family and friends, and funds will be a
little short. After all they reason, everyone is doing this and
December and January will be slow anyway.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Now is the time to
double, and maybe even redouble your efforts! The people who feel
they can renew their advertising efforts after the first of the
year, will miss this boat.
Your plan at this point should be to aggressively advertise your
business. Think about it. Many people will be short of funds, or
overextended due to the holiday gifting, and won't be standing in
line during the next few weeks to take advantage of your
opportunity. But, we all know it takes between 5 and 7 exposures
to get someone's attention. While the ads may not pay big
dividends in December, you will be reinforcing your branding with
your potential clients.
Take a lesson from the "brick and mortar" establishments. They
will be pounding us with their ads now more than ever, trying to
get their share of our holiday shopping dollars. And they will
continue this until well in January realizing that some people
have more expendable income after the holidays than before.
But, how about all those people getting first time computers?
Don't forget that the Internet doesn't take a holiday. marketing There are
thousands of prospects going online everyday. If you relax now,
you may be missing those prospects that you might otherwise get.
If you are in an affiliate program or in a multi-level business,
now is the ideal time to make yourself known. Many of these
programs allow participation with little or no up front
expenditure. If yours is one, feature this in your ads.
The design of your ads is critical at this time of the year. The
question you should pose is not "can you afford it now, but can
you afford not to".
The concept of advertising is sometimes difficult for people to
understand, especially by those involved for the first time. The
most important time to advertise is when business is slow. The
pre-holiday season will be slow if you market an online
opportunity. Now, many people will not realize this and curtail
their activities. The smart ones will and increase their ad
expenditures. They will get the "lion's share" of the business
available.
Some people will receive money as a holiday gift, and now is the
time to get their attention. The winner of this race will be the
first person they think of when the funds become available.
PC's currently exist in the majority of U.S. homes, and the
number of first time users increases everyday. PC makers are
trying to boost sales by cutting prices, leading to a major price
war. While this is bad for the PC makers, it is good for those in
business on the net as the number of new people coming on, who
are your prospects, always increases when this happens.
Two-way satellite service is now a viable broadband alternative
to cable modem and DSL service. The satellite is likely to appeal
to consumers who want high-speed Internet access, but who either
face long waits trying to obtain cable modem or DSL access, or
live in a rural area where it is not available. This will also
increase the number of people coming online.
If you are in business on the web, or planning to do so, now just
might be the time to take advantage of the lethargy that others
will face. The "Holidays" are not the time to slow down or
discontinue your marketing efforts.

Biz-Tips: Work For Yourself by Dr. Kevin Nunley
There is a HUGE trend going on in North America right now. The
media is starting to pick up on it, but don't expect them to give
this story the banner headlines it deserves.
Millions of people are starting and successfully working their
own businesses from home. Granted, solo operators have been a
part of the American scene forever, but their numbers have shot
way past 60 million during the past two years.
Income ranges from a good part-time salary to six figures or
more. On average, home workers make more than they ever did in a
regular job.
Back when I started my business in a spare bedroom, my neighbors
couldn't figure out how on earth I was making a living. Now just
about everyone in the neighborhood has their own home business.
Many (myself included) have grown and expanded to an outside
office or work place.
The Internet, fax, and cheap phone rates have made all this far
more do-able than it used to be. Attitudes have also changed.
People no longer tell you to give up your business and get a
"real job."
There is every indication that small self-owned businesses are
not only the wave of the future, but the best thing you can do in
the present. Start small. Do something you like and know,
probably something you learned in jobs you had. Go the library
and read up on everything relating to your new business. Talk
with others who have similar businesses. Try to learn about and
avoid common problems that can hold you back.

Are You Afraid of Success?
by Joan Sotkin
Do you ever get the feeling that you are standing on the threshold of success, but can't step into that place where you feel successful. Or, perhaps you have been successful, only to have your fortunes reversed.
There are many factors that contribute to success or failure, the most important of which is a person's state of consciousness. You can't create and maintain success unless your thoughts, beliefs and emotions are attuned to it. If you have beliefs about yourself, money or what success means that are in opposition to a successful life, you will find it difficult or impossible to create one.
Although many people crave success, they often have limiting beliefs that prevent it. For example, we've all heard, "It's lonely at the top." When we hear stories of celebrities who suffer from alcoholism, drug abuse and serious emotional problems, we see that success can bring with it many forms of discomfort. Princess Diana was the perfect example of someone who seemed to have everything, but suffered on many different levels -- and was alone in the midst of opulence..
When people think of success, they often equate it with financial abundance. But they also know that money often causes as many problems as it cures. In our fantasies, we often see money as a road to freedom. But the fact is, that having money can be an overwhelming responsibility that requires spending a lot of time taking care of it.
Developing a successful business can also be an overwhelming responsibility, one that you may unconsciously avoid. If you've never had a successful business, you may be scared away by what you have to learn and your fear of not cleverly implementing plans and strategies.
If you don't consider yourself successful now and dream of experiencing success, then you know that you have to change your thinking and behavior patterns. Obviously, if you keep on doing what you are doing, you are going to continue getting what you've got. The thought of making major changes can be frightening. Also, deciding what changes to make can be a daunting task.
Many people who dream of success, don't have a clear picture of what success means for them. Eliminating vagueness will help determine a course of action. Take some time with yourself thinking through what your dreams mean in real terms.
For example, I've heard many people say they want to build a healing center. Others want to build a business that involves selling and distributing product to a large customer base. Either scenario requires a large capital investment, sophisticated marketing and management skills, and strong drive and determination. If you have grand plans, think them through, and ask yourself if you are really ready to commit to doing everything your vision of success would require.
Perhaps you need to rethink your definition of success and examine what you really want in terms of inner and outer achievement. If material success was all it's cracked up to be, there would be more happy, "successful" people. It's not unusual for people who create large sums of money either through their own efforts or through inheritance to feel empty inside. There's a lot more to success than how much money you make and what you buy with it. Mother Theresa was, in my view, a successful person, yet she owned nothing.
Bottom line is that success is a feeling, not a measurable commodity. Small successes can teach you how to experience and deal with positive outcomes. Instead of aiming for a huge achievement and only accepting its accomplishment as success, reframe your life so that you can feel successful with smaller accomplishments, not all of which involve material acquisition. Teach a child something, give comfort to someone who is sick, create something of beauty, take time to enjoy what you already have. Then look at what you have done and allow yourself to feel successful.
If you work very hard and have such high expectations of yourself that you can never be satisfied with what you do, you will never feel successful. People who are really successful, don't beat themselves up or blame themselves for everything that doesn't work out the way they want. An element of success is satisfaction. The process of becoming successful requires that you learn to be satisfied. This often means giving up wanting and longing, two feelings that don't go with satisfaction.
It's no wonder that people are afraid of success. To achieve it means a lot of self-examination along with major lifestyle and behavior changes. Success requires discipline, determination and a strong belief in oneself. It's a whole lot easier to stay where you are than to move into a new state of being.
The fact is that you are already successful. When you can accept this fact, you will be able to expand upon it and live a satisfying, abundant life.

What is REALLY involved in running a home business
By Nick Balgowan
Contrary to popular belief nothing is as simple as buying a magic e-book or joining the latest network marketing craze, to suddenly owning a healthy low maintenance online business. It just doesn't happen.
It a nut shell, it takes LOTS of time, money, effort, dedication and a lot of skill and planning. If you are looking for a quick $25 fix, then I am afraid that I simply can't help you. Oh, I forgot that the most important skill of all is juggling.
That's right, juggling. You need to prepare yourself for the long haul. My first online business, took nearly 6 months before it even covered my startup costs (business name, legal fees, bank accounts, web hosting etc.) So I needed some way to eat, sleep and be happy for 6 months while building this business. I chose to continue with my day job and put away as much money as I could to live on for the following 6 months, when I would take the switch from running the "home based business" while I was still actually working full time, to spending the following 6 months dedicated to growing my own business. I needed cash in the bank to do this.
I'd wake at 6:00am and respond to emails and process my online orders. I'd leave home at 8:00am to arrive at work by 9:00am. I had a special relationship with our international courier to pickup deliveries from our garage (without being present personally.) Fortunately I was able to use my ISP's web mail facility from my "day desk" to response to my personal clients during the day. It was great. I could respond to my personal customers quickly, answer questions and let them know their orders had been received and would be processed later that day. And I mean, speak with them personally by email. Auto-Responders are great, but they always look like an auto-responder. In exchange for this fringe benefit from my employer, I gave up ½ my lunch break and offered to be available by telephone for emergency after hours support (I worked in IT if you hadn't guessed.) When I arrived home at 6:00pm, I'd spend usually another hour processing orders received during the day, have di!
nner, watch the nightly news, have a quick 30min bike ride if possible, and slip into bed around 10pm after doing some web page marketing.
I had designed a system that allowed be to slowly build an online business, while saving money to make the jump to full time, self employed, work at home. Which inevitable comes with an initial salary sacrifice. Something like 3 out of every 4 small business's fail. It is simply because they have large startup over heads, with little or no immediate income. You don't need an accounting degree to work out if your expenses are larger than your net income, the business is not in good shape. Hence, so many people end up closing their small business and going back to their "day job." I was determined that this would NOT happen to me.
There was lots to learn, and learn fast. Accounting, advertising, marketing, business practices, web page design, web page optimization, web page promotion, email marketing, web page statistics... the list goes on. Oh, and customer relations. So many articles I see focus so much on meta tags, keywords etc, not paying much attention to the customers, and people actually looking at your web page.
I dabbled for months, years probably, in optimizing my web pages, using submission software, swapping web page links. NOTHING has worked better than following up with my customers, offering affiliate and referral commissions, providing an online post-sales customer followup / satisfaction survey. I've since noticed customers of mine writing nice reviews about their experience with us on industry forums, I can track the click throughs from these reviews and they do generate sales for us. The best advertising is simply the advertising that works, not necessarily that is the most expensive. From this I can see more and more incoming web page links and I haven't even needed to ask for them!
I try to update or add content to our web page EVERY DAY. I spend at least 1 hour every morning improving the content, changing the content, looking at ways to stream line the HTML code, checking what our competition is doing, looking for the latest innovations in our industry. This constant tinkering with my web page seemed to interest search engine spiders like Google to return more often. I'd see google crawlers in my site stats maybe 1-2 times a month, its not nearly 100 times a month. So changes to my web page are quickly indexed.
Another misconception with home businesses is that they run themselves. This might be the case for electronic products, such as e-books and web templates that don't involved actual product handling. But this market is saturated beyond comprehension, and from my understanding, charge backs from credit card providers are rampant as customers aren't happy with their purchase and demand refunds.
In order to convince a real person to order from your online business, they must be convinced that you are, in fact, also a real person. You need to speak with them. This can be via content on your web page, PERSONALIZED email replies (e.g. Dear John or Dear Mary, not Dear Client or Dear Customer.) Your need to answer their emails fully, honestly, promptly and also follow up on your emails. If a customer on Monday asks you to confirm a price, availability and TOTAL order cost. Email the information ASAP, address the customer by name, and sign the email with your name. If you don't hear back from the customer, follow-up with THEM (don't forget to print this policy in your online privacy policy to keep everybody happy.) Who knows, if you don't follow up with the potential client, they could already have their wallet open, credit card out, and ordering from your biggest competitor. Best you get back to them before somebody else does. And it will happen! I started this policy after the exact same thing happened to me. I learn quickly and make sure that I will never lose a sale to a competitor again by not following up with EVERY potential customer.
SPEED is also important. You need to respond to emails ASAP. If you consider that most people still access the internet by dial up modem, they login the internet, do a bit of web surfing, send some emails and then logoff. Their home computer is switched off, and may not be turned on again sometimes for days. So if you take a day to respond to emails, there is every likely hood that your potential client may not actually receive your response for some time - maybe a week. The best way to grab this potential client's attention is to response to their email IMMEDIATELY. They will receive your reply during their same internet session. It also sets their expectation on your high service levels and responsiveness. Answering their first question, which must be "how good is this company anyway" and "do I trust them with my money?"
Hmmm, so I have to sit at my computer 24 hours a day and respond to emails? Doesn't sound like much of an existence does it? Sadly, I admit I went through a period actually doing this. About 1 or 2 months I think. Yes, I am sad I know. This was the largest recordable growth period for my first online business. Then I learnt about Outlook mail rules (I actually knew about them all along, I just hadn't thought to use them!) I could setup Microsoft Outlook to screen my emails looking for orders from my web page, send them to a specific folder, and then play a sound file when an order or customer question arrived from my web page. Now, at last, I was finally free from the computer and home office, just listening out for my incoming order / customer question sound. Actually, it became a motivation factor. My wife and I picked some of the sound clips from Comedy Central Inc, which make receiving an order even more fun (yes I know, simple things.) But it is good to know when I hear "I've got mail" sung by Special Ed, we've got an order.
Basically, you need to build a strong loyalty with your customers. You can do this by responding to them fast, giving them accurate information, and delivering their products fast. You need to spell out explicitly why they should buy your widget and chose your company, over the 1,000 other similar firms. To start a successful home business, you need to prepare for an initial dry spell. Remember, nothing just happens over night.
You need to pick a product or niche market. You need to make yourself known as an expert in this field, you need to get your name out there and you need to convince potential customers to become real customers. This all involves the evil W-word; WORK.
Now without sound too like a cliché, we own our own house, work about 2 hours a day (early morning) have a little boy crawling around, another on the way, and building a brand new dream house for ourselves - all with cash without any bank loans, fees, guarantees or interest. We didn't get here by paying $25 for a "guaranteed successful online business design" that simply involved selling $25 "guaranteed successful online business designs." We have daily regular and scheduled collections from our local and international couriers, and if we aren't home, we leave them at the front door. So the rest of the day, is all free time now.

SETTING MEANS GETTING
by Tom Hopkins
The average human being has the ability to achieve almost anything. Lack of basic capability is rarely the problem, but rather finding out what you want and being willing to sacrifice, change, and grow to satisfy the want.
In the sales training seminars I conduct throughout the country, I teach a 20-step system of goal setting to help people achieve and I firmly believe it can be applied to all walks of life. Here it is:
1. If it's not in writing, it's not a goal. An unwritten want is a wish, a dream, a never-happen. If it's in writing, it's a commitment.
2. If it's not specific, it's not a goal. Broad desires and lofty aims have no effect. It must be concrete.
3. Goals must be believable. If you don't believe you can achieve a goal, you won't pay the price for it.
4. An effective goal is an exciting challenge. It must demand your best and a bit more or it isn't going to change your ways and elevate your lifestyle.
5. Goals must be adjusted to new information. Adjust them down if they become unbelievable or up if they're too easy.
6. Dynamic goals guide our choices. If you want it badly enough, you'll turn off the TV and get to it. Goals will show you the right way to go on most decisions.
7. Don't set short-term goals for more than 90 days. If you set a short-term goal that takes more than 90 days, you may lose interest.
8. Maintain a balance between long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals tend to be hidden in a fog of the future, so have some short-term goals - like clothes, cars, vacations- to keep your excitement up.
9. Include your loved ones in your goals. Involve them and they'll buck you up when you need encouragement.
10. Set goals in all areas of your life. Have other goals besides career objectives.
11. Your goals must harmonize. Whenever you detect a conflict, set priorities that will eliminate the conflict.
12. Review your goals regularly. Remember, long-term goals can only be achieved if they are the culmination of short-term goals.
13. Set vivid goals. Define not only what you want but by when you want it, and concentrate on it for a few moments every day.
14. Don't chisel your goals in granite. Sometimes you have to change goals to conform to your growing awareness of what's really important in your life.
15. Reach out into the future. The idea of goal-setting is to plan your life rather than taking it as it comes. Begin by setting 20-year goals. Then 10-year, five-year, 30-month, 12-month, monthly, weekly, and finally goals for tomorrow and each day for the coming week.
16. Have a set of goals for every day, and review results each night.
17. Train yourself to crave your goals. Visualize yourself possessing what you've set your goals for.
18. Set activity goals, not production goals. Activity will lead to production by itself.
19. Understand luck, and make it work for you. Expect good things to happen, and they probably will.
20. Star now. Give goal-setting two hours of concentrated through today. Then set aside 10 minutes a day for the next 21 days to review and revise. After that, two minutes a day and one hour a week is all it will take to keep you on track.
Try this system if you want to achieve your goals and within 21 days you'll be well on your way to an immensely greater and richer future.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY IS LIKE THE SET OF THE SAIL
by Jim Rohn
In the process of living, the winds of circumstances blow on us all in an unending flow that touches each of our lives.
We have all experienced the blowing winds of disappointment, despair and heartbreak. Why, then, would each of us, in our own individual ship of life, all beginning at the same point, with the same intended destination in mind, arrive at such different places at the end of the journey? Have we not all been blown by the winds of circumstances and buffeted by the turbulent storms of discontent?
What guides us to different destinations in life is determined by the way we have chosen to set our sail. The way that each of us thinks makes the major difference in where each of us arrive. The major difference is the set of the sail.
The same circumstances happen to us all. We have disappointments and challenges. We all have reversals and those moments when, in spite of our best plans and efforts, things just seem to fall apart. Challenging circumstances are not events reserved for the poor, the uneducated or the destitute. The rich and the poor have marital problems. The rich and the poor have the same challenges that can lead to financial ruin and personal despair. In the final analysis, it is not what happens that determines the quality of our lives, it is what we choose to do when we have struggled to set the sail and then discover, after all of our efforts, that the wind has changed directions.
When the winds change, we must change. We must struggle to our feet once more and reset the sail in the manner that will steer us toward the destination of our own deliberate choosing. The set of the sail, how we think and how we respond, has a far greater capacity to destroy our lives than any challenges we face. How quickly and responsibly we react to adversity is far more important than the adversity itself. Once we discipline ourselves to understand this, we will finally and willingly conclude that the great challenge of life is to control the process of our thinking.
Learning to reset the sail with the changing winds rather than permitting ourselves to be blown in a direction we did not purposely choose requires the development of a whole new discipline. It involves going to work on establishing a powerful, personal philosophy that will help to influence in a positive way all that we do and that we think and decide. If we can succeed in this worthy endeavor, the result will be a change in the course of our income, lifestyle and relationships, and in how we feel about the things of value as well as the times of challenge. If we can alter the way we perceive, judge and decide upon the main issues of life, then we can dramatically change our lives.

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you; so email me anytime and you will receive a personal reply from me.
And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter... Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not financially do the same. EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the income. The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it! I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements, redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over sixty pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what? On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education. I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time, after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations, write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle...I am here, it's 2003 and I am a very happy stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services, products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
Thank you for your interest in Modern Opportunity...
