Emoticons
Emoticons are little text representations of emotions. When you
talk to someone, they can tell what you mean by the tone of your
voice or the look on your face. For example, maybe someone says
something like, "Why are you such a jerk?"
Now, if they say it while they're laughing, you know that it's
just lighthearted humor. If they say it with a bit of anger in
their voice, you realize that it's probably time to back off.
When you are writing however, you don't have these visual or
auditory clues. Well, there is a way to interject this into your
writing through the use of emoticons. Hint - look at them
sideways.
Here's a list of the more common emoticons that you'll run
across:
- Smiley face
- Smiley face w/ a nose
- Sad face
- Sad face w/ a nose
- Person laughing
- Not laughing or bored
- Winking
These are some other commonly used indicators.
- Grin
- Very Big Grin
- Lots of Laughs
Some browsers will automatically display some of these as
graphics. If you see a yellow smiley face, there is actually a
series of characters that are being translated to create it in
your browser.
There are tons more to be found floating around the internet. So,
express yourself and have fun.

A Resolution Worth Keeping

New Years Resolutions: Making them is a tradition -keeping of them is usually optional. That's unfortunate, because some of the pledges we make in those moments before the calendar changes are wonderful things to aspire to - spending more time with our children, exercising regularly, stopping a bad habit like smoking - or considering chocolate one of the main food groups. Yet, this is the one time of the year that it's condoned - almost expected - that we don't follow through on our promises.
But what if we did follow through? What if we could make a resolution that changed our lives for the better? What if we made a tiny adjustment in our perspective and it allowed us to be happier, feel freer, and enjoy a more mindful existence?
Well, get ready to make a commitment - it's as easy as embracing the idea of simplicity. Yes, simplicity.
The start of the New Year is the perfect time to make some changes. Resolve to get back to basics. I'm not advocating a cabin in the woods with no heat or electricity, just a small step to the left of the consumer frenzy. Where do you start? Right at home in your own headspace - by making a conscious decision that your time and daily experiences are more important than money and stuff.
Reduce your clutter: Unless you use it regularly, or it holds a high degree of sentimental value, it should go. Choose a charity and schedule a pick up. Just think of how much easier your house will be to clean, and how much easier it will be to find things once you've thinned out your belongings.
Decrease distractions: Cell phones, voice mail, two-way walkie-talkies, online instant messenger, and palm pilots are all tools created for convenience. Left unchecked, however, they can start running your life. Be sure your not becoming a slave to advanced technology. Oh, and turn off that darn TV too.
Learn to say "no": This tiny two-letter word is your best defense against becoming overextended. Start using it - no one will think any less of you if you do.
Learn to say "yes" when others offer help: Stop with the Superwoman fallacy. There is no harm in accepting help when offered, or even in asking for it when needed. In fact, most people are happy to be of assistance.
Cut down on compulsive buying: Shopping has become a sport in this country and credit card debt is hitting an all time high. Before you break out your plastic to get that new Prada handbag ask yourself - do I really need this? Will this improve my life? Is this "thing" worth the time I will have to put in working in order to pay for it? If the answer is no then don't buy it.
Relinquish some control: You can't speed up the driver in front of you, make the check out line at the supermarket move more efficiently, or govern the happiness of others. Just let it go. Take some deep breathes in traffic, practice your Kegel Exercise while waiting at the grocery store, and lead your life with integrity. Don't carry the weight of the world on your shoulders - it's too heavy.
Reduce decisions: While having a choice is a good thing, too many options can be overwhelming. Whether you are contemplation a major purchase, or deciding what to cook for dinner, limit your self to two options. Choose one, then be happy with your decision - second guessing never helped anyone.
Enjoy the little things in life: Read a book, take a walk, have a bubble-bath, start a snowball fight with your kids, eat together as a family at the kitchen table, garden, snuggle, pursue a hobby, listen to music, write a letter, meditate, and follow your passions. Partake in everyday pleasures - all the things that don't entail shopping, spending, or crowds - and spend quality time with the ones you love.
Living simply is not about depravation; it's about living well. Our lives are complicated, in part, because we make them that way. Resolve to make 2005 the year of simplicity, and greet the coming months with a relaxed and peaceful spirit.

Why Small Businesses Fail (or Fail To Thrive)

Tammy, a skilled and gifted horticulturist, called me to
discuss what she needed to know to start her own florist and
landscaping business. She had been in the horticulture
industry for 10 years and was incredibly skilled at working
with flowers and plants - one of the best. She also had great
design skills, as well as good customer service skills. But
she had little business management experience and less self-
employment experience.
Discovering why small businesses fail was a smart research
project for her, as it helped her uncover her own weaknesses
and begin to build up some strengths before she invested in
becoming self-employed. It's no secret that a large majority
of small businesses fail in the first five years. The question
is: Why do they fail and what can I do to prevent problems in
my own business?
As we talked, we reviewed some of the common reasons why small
businesses fail. Below are 14 top reasons, which might help
you to determine why your business isn't growing and thriving.
Some of them are related to learnable business skills; others
relate to personal attitudes, habits, or self-sabotaging
belief, which are not so easy to change, except through
coaching or other self-development work.
1. Mistaking a business for a hobby: Just because you love
something doesn't mean you should convert it into a business.
Too often businesses fail because the owner feels their passion
is shared by others. Research your business idea and make sure
it's viable.
2. Poor planning: Yes, you must have a business plan. It can
be a simple three-page plan or a huge 40-page plan. The point
is that you've looked at all the aspects of your business and
are prepared to handle problems when they arise. Your business
plan helps you to focus on your goals and your vision, as well
as setting out plans to accomplishing them. And don't get
mellow - revisit and revise your business plan annually.
3. Entrepreneurial excitement: Entrepreneurs often get excited
about new ideas, but are unable to determine if they're "true
opportunities" and/or put them into practice. Test every new
idea against your business plan and mission statement before
deciding whether to undertake it or not, and ask yourself, do
I have the time and skill to implement this?
4. Putting all your eggs in one basket: Too often, small
business owners will have just one product, one service or
one big client. They cling tight to this one thing because
it brings in good revenue. But what if the one thing
disappears? Variety and diversification will cushion you
against the ebb and flow of business tides.
5. Poor record keeping and financial controls: Yes, you have
to keep financial and business records, you have to review your
revenue and expense report each month, and you have to file
taxes and other business-related filings. If you don't know how
to do these, or don't want to, get help from someone who does.
6. Lack of experience in running a business or in the
industry you're entering: There are so many hats you have to
wear in order to run a business effectively. On top of that,
you have to understand your industry, the skills required
to offer your products and services, and the trends in the
industry. If you don't know about these basic skills, educate
yourself. Talk to others who are successfully running their
own businesses, talk to industry leaders, get a book, find a
website, get a coach, do your homework. And keep increasing
your business and industry skills by attending classes or
reading new books every year.
7. Poor money management: You need to be able to live for
one to two years without income when getting started; often
businesses are very slow to get off the ground. Also, you
have to create and use a realistic business budget, and not
constantly drain the business income on personal spending.
8. Wrong location: If your business runs out of commercial
space, you need to make sure that you are convenient to your
customers, and near to your suppliers and your employees.
9. Competition: Customers will go where they can find the best
products and services. It's important for you to know who your
competition is, what they have to offer, and what makes your
own products or services better.
10. Procrastination and poor time management: Putting off
tasks that you don't enjoy will sink your business faster than
anything else. You can't afford to waste time on unimportant
tasks while critical tasks pile up. All tasks need to be done;
if you don't like to do them (or don't want to spend your time
doing them), hire someone to do them for you. If your time
management and prioritizing skills are rusty, hire a small
business coach or take a class to help you.
11. Ineffective marketing: Learn the basics of marketing
and make sure that you track the success or failure of each
marketing technique you use, then dump those that aren't
working.
12. Ineffective sales techniques: Once you have a potential
client, you have to know how to lead them down the sales path.
If you don't understand the basics of selling, get some
education on it immediately. If a selling technique doesn't
work, try another one.
13. Poor customer service: Once you have a customer, you have
to keep them. There are two key points here - make sure you pay
attention to what the customer wants (and how these wants can
change over time), and make sure you provide quick return of
phone calls and emails, proper billing, win-win problem solving
and an overall pleasant demeanor.
14. Entrepreneurial burnout: owning your own business requires
a huge investment of time, money, energy and emotion. It's easy
to work long days and forget to take time off. But in the end,
this only causes burnout where your motivation and creativity
will suffer, and a pessimistic attitude prevails. You'll find
yourself unable to balance your business and personal life, and
both will suffer. Schedule self-care time into your work week
and be religious about taking time off from your business.
Dunn and Bradstreet recently did a study and determined that
"90% of small businesses that fail do so because of a lack of
skills and knowledge on the part of the owner." However, D&B
also did a study that showed that over 90% of small businesses
were still in business after five years IF they had the help
of a Small Business Development Center (SBDC) or other expert

of the areas where she needed to grow, and created a task plan
to get the help she needed. Today she has a thriving business

a little planning and a close look at both the reasons for your
success and where you might need to get a little help.

3. What is the location of your business? (Is it on the web? (Then say so)
4. What is your product or service? (Don't overwhelm yourself with too many products)
5. How much will you charge for your products or services? (Check the competition)
6.What is your market? (Who will be purchasing this product or service? Do your homework)
7. How will you advertise or market your product or service? (Do you know the
difference between advertising and marketing?)
8. What supplies will you need and where will you get these supplies from?
9. What have you calculated to be your startup costs?
10. What have you accomplished to date?
11. What is your merchandise policy? (Is there a money back guarantee?)
12. What will space cost? (On the web or in reality)
13. Who are your competitors? (Have you studied them? If not, how can you compete?)
14. Who is your management? (Who is responsible for everything being organized?)

17. What is your plan of action? (What will you do next?)
18. What equipment and office supplies will you need?

So you want to start a business but you don't have a lot of
money? Start your business online, and it won't be a problem.
There are some pretty terrific resources you can use. Some of
them you have to pay for, but they are inexpensive and can get
you started quickly and easily.
1. A Domain and Web Hosting
If you want others to see you as a professional and take you
seriously, then you need to invest in your own domain and web
hosting.
Purchased separately, the cost can add up very quickly. Here are
some very low cost solutions to help you put your name on the
map.
Dot Easy - http://www.doteasy.com - For only $25 per year, you
can purchase your own domain. The web hosting is completely
free. Although this hosting account is stripped of all the bells
and whistles like CGI, you still get 15MB of bannerless hosting
for free, and if you build minisites, this is a really cheap way
for you to get started. Buy a domain a month, and before you
know it, you have your own empire of products set up for a lot
less than if you had bought all of this separately.
Go Daddy - http://www.godaddy.com - Although as far as I know
they offer domain names for the cheapest price on the Internet
at $6.95, their service is pretty good. I buy all of my domains
here, and I've never had any problems.
Free Web Space - http://100best-free-web-space.com/ - If money
is a real problem right now, but you still want to make a good
impression, then this site can help you find the most affordable
web hosting or even bannerless hosting that's free.
Remember, you get what you pay for, so eventually, when you can
afford it, upgrade. There are some good budget web hosts out
there like Dot Easy, but for the most part, you get what you pay
for.
2. Web Site Creation Tools
There are some fantastic tools on the Internet you can use to
build your web site, and they're all free.
Considered to be the best HTML editor online, Front Page 2000
will give you hundreds of scripts, as well as a free FTP client
you can unzip into the directory and upload your files directly
from the HTML editor.
There are four different modes, including beginner and expert,
so no matter what level at creating HTML you are, this free
editor will definitely help you.
You'll find it here: http://www.evrsoft.com.
While you're there, make sure you check out the free metatag
creator, as well as some of the other great free online tools
you'll find there.
3. Scripts
If you want to get the most from your web site, scripts will
help you do this. You don't have to be an expert in installation
either. You can quickly and easily learn how to install them. I
taught myself from reading some of the webmaster sites online.
You have two choices when it comes to installing scripts on your
site:
You can install them yourself, or you can use remotely hosted
scripts. Remotely hosted scripts are great when you don't have a
CGI bin on your site.

Autoresponders will help you in two ways: you can use them for
your opt in lists and ezines, and you can also use them to
follow up with your customers.
With opt in lists and ezines, an autoresponder will save you the
trouble of handling subscribe and unsubscribe requests, which
can become very tedious after awhile. This will allow you to
automate the mundane part of building a relationship with your
customers and newsletter subscribers, providing you with the
credibility you need online to make the sale.
Two sites that offer free autoresponders that are very reliable

Please note: when using free autoresponders, the site owner will
send his/her ads with your messages. This is valuable message
real estate. It's better to pay for your autoresponders, if
possible, so that you can place your own ads in the headers and
footers of all your messages.
5. Online Tools
There is a whole host of online tools you can use to help you
with your business including email formatters, newsletter
formatters, sales letter and press release formatters, as well
as wizards to help you build your web site.

release creator, as well as a sales letter generator.
Free Online Wizards -

offers everything from a wizard to help you syndicate your

tips and articles too.
Email Formatter - http://www.formatit.com - Tired of getting
emails with a ton of >>>>> in them? You can use this site to
strip those tags out, as well as reformat your emails to any
width. Great for formatting articles too.
6. Business Software
You can find thousands of dollars in free software to help you
build your business by searching through software sites online.
My favorite is Freeware Home: http://www.freewarehome.com.
You'll find over 7,000 applications at last count here, and
they're all free, full sized versions of the program.
Two applications you won't want to be without are:
Open Office - http://www.openoffice.org - Formerly Star Office,
this open source application is the best rival to Microsoft
Office. You can use it to do everything from convert your
documents to PDF, to word processing, spreadsheets, and
presentations. There's also a version for MAC, making this a
must see application when you can't afford other expensive
applications.
Banana Cash Books -
http://www.banana.ch/banana4/eng/bc4_cashbook.shtml - Although
this single entry accounting program accepts just about any
currency, if you want to use the accounting method the IRS
recommends for small business, this nice little free program
will definitely do the trick.
7. Business Education
Once you have your business up and running, it's a good idea to
stay up to date with your business and marketing knowledge.
There are a lot of great ways to do this including forums,
article directories, mailing lists, and newsletters.
There are also some great resource heavy sites out there you can
benefit from. Below are three of my favorites:

Botes, you'll find plenty of ecourses, seminars and more
covering small business, ecommerce, marketing, and other topics.
You need to sign up for an account, but it's free, and
definitely worth a look.

Jimmy D. Brown, one of my all time favorite marketers, and quite
frankly, one of the best, you'll find audio, ecourses, and other
resources in plain English that can teach you how to market
online. Jimmy doesn't just teach you what to do; he shows you
how to do it, and he spells it out. It doesn't matter if you are
a complete newbie, or if you have been marketing for some time.
You'll benefit from Jimmy's excellent teaching.
Ebook Directory - http://www.ebookdirectory.com - Run by Noel
Hynes, this is the most comprehensive collection of small
business and Internet marketing ebooks on the Internet, and
they're absolutely free. You'll also find plenty of other ebooks

So you truly believe that you are able to have a business. Why, because others have one? Or because you think you would be good at it. So did I until I failed for the first three times. Then, I got a clue. Business doesn't just happen!!!
Before you make that move into what may be the worst idea you have ever had in life, take the following test for success. Be honest with you because it is you who will be made or broken in the process.
1. Are you organized or do you have to try to remember where your house keys are on a daily basis?
2. Do you have personal drive or do you have to be persuaded to change the channel on the TV?
3. Are you a leader or do you have trouble getting your pet to go outside?
4. How is your health? Do you get a cold when there is a 1-degree change in the weather?
5. Are you able to maintain for long hours? Or will your place of business close at noon, because you are so tired?
6. Are you mentally UP for the challenge?
7. Are you prepared for the risk involved?
8. Are you prepared to wait several months for your first prophet?
9. What is your reason for wanting to start a business?
10. Is your business your passion?
11. Who are your customers outside of your immediate circle of influence?
12. What are the demographics of your customer base?
13. Do you have the expertise you need in the business you want to start?
14. How are you going to sell what you have at a price that will return an adequate profit for you?
15. Can you obtain the necessary funds you will need to start and keep the business running without getting into a cash flow problem?
16. Do you think and plan ahead?
17. Do you have a business plan?
18. Do you know the difference between marketing, promoting and advertising?
19. Who is advising you?
20. Start writing out your plan.

Ancient Art of Yoga is the Modern Man's/Woman's Savior to Combat Stress

Problems in the modern world can best be alleviated by calling upon the ancient art of Yoga. The practice has been around for thousands of years; but now, more than ever, we need its incredible powers. Just like the home remedies of peoples living centuries ago, Yoga can be incorporated into revitalization of your mind, body and spirit for the 21st century. "The ancient practice of yoga has long been regarded as an effective way of relieving emotional stress, curing bodily ills, and achieving personal equilibrium." 1
Whether you work at home or "out in the world" stresses will get to you from all corners of your life. The trick is not to spend time trying to avoid them…you can't…nobody can; but, rather, we ALL must learn how to deal with the inevitable occurrences of life's stressful situations.
Yoga is free/ inexpensive; can be done without props; needs no special clothing; can be practiced in the home/office; and anyone of any age or physical ability can incorporate Yoga into their lifestyle and be able to reap the myriad benefits. "…yoga helps with all these problems. At the physical level, it gives relief from countless ailments. The practice of postures strengthens the body and creates a feeling of well-being. From the psychological viewpoint, Yoga sharpens the intellect and aids concentration It steadies the emotions and encourages a caring concern for others. Above all, it gives hope."2
I tried Yoga on a lark because it was offered in my school district's adult education program. Caring for my two little grandsons while working from home had left me with fatigue, soreness and a general lack of stamina. What I found, was an enjoyable way to "de-stress", increase flexibility and feel a sense of inner peace. Though hard to believe, the practice of a centuries old art can alleviate the stresses of today, it has helped me immeasurably with the many stresses we "modern" people exhibit. My advice…endeavor to make Yoga a part of your life and your life will be enhanced much more than you can imagine.

Simple Ways to Super-Charge Your Goals and Make Them Work for 2005!

Goals. Most people have a love-hate relationship with goals. They love them because they are such a great idea and a wonderful way to motivate us to achieve, as well as evaluate our progress, but hate them because for many, they more often than not go unattained and simply frustrate them. This isn't what goals should do!
So here are some simple ways to set goals so that we achieve them! After all, what good is a goal if it isn't something you achieve? Here are some simple steps you can take to make sure that you see change in your life this year.
Narrow your focus. That's right, start small. Pick two or three areas tops, that you want to work on. Too many people say to themselves, "I want to do this, and this, and this, and this..." and they end up doing nothing! Most of what you do throughout your day can be done without a lot of mental or emotional exertion, but change isn't one of them. So focus down to a couple. This way you can get some victory in these areas. Here are some areas to think about: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Spiritual, Financial, and Relational. What areas need some work? Now, what one thing should be the first item on the change list? The others will come later, but for now, you should focus on two or three total.
Keep the long-term in mind, but set your sights on achieving your goals in the short-term. Do you want to lose 75 pounds? Good. Long-term you will. But for now, think short-term. Don't think about losing 75 pound by summer 2006. Think about losing 5 pounds by February 1st. This does two things. First, it makes it urgent. Instead of blowing it and saying, "Oh well, I still have 17 months to lose the 75 pounds" (because eventually that becomes 2 months to lose 75 pounds) your goal is only a few weeks out. This is better in terms of reaching your goal. Secondly, as you reach these shorter goals, it gives you regular victories instead of regular progress. Progress feels good, but achieving a goal is awesome!
Reward yourself when you achieve the goal. When you lose the 5 pounds by February 1st, go get yourself a grande whole-milk mocha. But just one! Then get back to your goal for December 1st. This puts a little fun back into the process of self-control and self-discipline. You will look forward to the reward and when the going gets tough, you will say, "two more weeks, two more pounds, then..."
That's it. I truly believe that it can be that simple for you.
This adds some ideas to the above article.
1. Don't bite off more than you can chew. Instead of saying, "I am going to quit my three pack a day habit cold turkey," say "I am going to drop to a pack and a half a day." You can always make new resolutions when you have achieved the first ones. Give yourself small victories a little at a time. Instead of saying "I am going to lose 75 pounds," say "I am going to lose 20 pounds."
2. Be specific in your timeline. Don't just say, "I am going to lose 20 pounds." Say, "I am going to lose 20 pounds by July 1st." This way, when you start to be tempted in the ice cream aisle in the middle of May, you can say, "Nope, only 10 more pounds to go in a month and a half and I am not going to blow it."
3. Post your resolutions where you will see them every day. This will keep the resolution in the front of your mind at all times. Instead of forgetting that you are trying to lose weight and ordering a big, thick porterhouse, you will have been reminded earlier that day that you need to go with something a little more on the lighter side. It will help your will beat your desire.
4. Find an encouraging person, who you respect, to keep you accountable. This person should ask you, at an interval established by the both of you, how it is going. They must be the encouraging type, though. If you are blowing it, they can say, "Well, that's okay, get back to it tomorrow." If you are doing well, they can say, "Awesome job. I'll talk to you next week." You will look forward to their weekly encouragement.
5. Find a partner. That's right, someone who is trying to accomplish the same thing (or something different if need be). Just make sure that they really want to change, or they will end up just belly-aching about how hard it is and you will both fall into the abyss.
6. Write down a list of all of the benefits that will come if you accomplish this. If it is losing weight it might be something like this: Feel better, better self-esteem, longer life, clothes are more comfortable, no more time spent sewing on popped buttons, wife says you look 22 again, etc. If it is quitting smoking, it may look like this: Better breath, no more brown fingers, no more wrinkles on my face, no more red eyes, no more smelly clothes, longer life, wife don't make me spend two hours a day on the back porch, etc. This will help you see what you will get from accomplishing your resolution.
7. Plan a reward if you accomplish your resolution. It can be anything from small to large. If you drop the twenty pounds, go out for dinner and dessert. Then get back to lose the next 20. If it is quitting smoking, go on a mini-vacation. Whatever you do, reward yourself. Or let a spouse or a friend pick the reward. Then splurge and enjoy!

I have a Dream Speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guarranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, nad the pursuit of happiness.
It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.
And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.
I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew our of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."
And if America is to ba a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California!
But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
When we let freedom ring, whem we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential business opportunity web site. And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter... Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not financially do the same. EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the income. The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it! I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements, redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over sixty pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what? On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education. I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time, after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations, write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle...I am here, it's 2003 and I am a very happy stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services, products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
