Viral Attacks
There are several new ploys designed to get you to open a file
which contains a virus. One purportedly is from AOL telling you
that there was a mailing error and an email to you that could
not be delivered is attached. You are instructed to open the
file to read the email.
Another from Earthlink tells you that your password had to be
changed and to open the file to get your new one. And yet
another claims you have won something such as tickets to the
World Cup.
Don't fall for these traps and open an attachment that you did
not expect.
If you are using Netscape, you are vulnerable to attack by code
hidden on a web page. As of this morning there was not a patch
for the bug available, and the security company Secuna advises
that you do not use Netscape until the flaw is fixed. You can
download their "Beta" version which they claim is more secure at
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/default.jsp

You have probably had the experience at one time or another of
feeling stuck in your life. Of just sitting in one place -
unclear of what decision you should make.
How can you move forward in life when you feel unclear about the
next step you need to take? Admittedly, such a lack of clarity
can cause some pretty extreme stress.
It is difficult to move forward if you do not have clarity,
since clarity of purpose often controls your supply of life
energy. Knowing what you want generates the energy to pursue it.
While not knowing drains your energy.
So what can you do if you lack clarity? What are your options?
If you are afraid of making the wrong choice, you can wait and
hope for clarity. Or you can try to think your options through
in your own mind.
But the truth is, you will never really figure life out. In
terms of life-questions - life has a way of just resolving
itself, with or without our conscious intervention or so-called
decision-making.
And even when we think we have everything all figured out - life
will seldom deliver a perfect replica of our mental picture.
One good way to conquer uncomfortable indecision is to simply
make a choice from among your unknowns. Whether or not you feel
certain your choice is the right choice - just take a small step
in what seems to be the best direction, in spite of your doubt
or confusion.
There is great power in action. Movement in any direction will
break you free from the cement of indecision - and provide new
information and experiences. Action sends ripples of energy and
change out into the world. And since life is so totally
unpredictable, who knows how your situation will change once you
get some action energy into motion.
You may even want to think of your life as a novel you are
reading. You are only part of the way into the book - and you
really do not know what is going to happen next. How could you
know? The book is still being written!
The challenge you face is this: Dare you move forward in the
face of uncertainty? Can you handle taking action without
knowing whether it is the right action?
You may feel confused or anxious, and wonder if you are making
the right decision. But somewhere along in your life novel you
may discover there was no right decision.
Here is what I have learned in my own roller coaster version of
life: If you find you have stepped onto the wrong path, you can
always adjust your direction. And any so-called mistakes simply
add to your personal wisdom about what does not work -- thus
taking you closer to discovering what does work.
There is great power in action!
Go for it. Even if you make the wrong choice, at least you will
generate some Zen action energy and break free of the painful,
mind-numbing cement of indecision!

Due Diligence

Most of us think of hype as exaggerated or extravagant claims,
made especially in advertising or promotional material.
Sometimes it is deceptive and deliberately misleading. While
we have become a bit immune to this through constant exposure,
it always seems that someone comes up with a fresh approach that
is not immediately recognized.
Con artists have been around since the beginning of time, and
are always willing to take advantage of another "hot prospect".
But every scam has "red flags" and a little common sense should
prevail so you do not fall prey to them. Let's examine a few we
get by email everyday.
"Complimentary Vacation Package" - this one has been around a
long time, but has now found its way to the web. It starts off
with "Congratulations! You will be our guest in Orlando,
Florida, home of Walt Disney World, for 4 days and 3 nights. All
compliments of major Vacation Resort Developers." Reading it,
you might feel you have won a contest. In actuality, this is not
the case. It is a high pressure sales campaign designed to sell
you a "timeshare" vacation package.
Another variation promises deeply discounted vacation packages.
You pay for a package that seems great on the surface, but in
reality is either third rate accommodations or doesn't exist at
all.
"Guaranteed Winner" - they state - "You're going to get one of
these top five prizes, guaranteed!" In this scam you normally
send some information, and either return it by email or fill out
a form on a web site. They require that you supply your
telephone number to be eligible. You will then be contacted by a
telemarketer who confirms that you have been chosen for one of
the five "valuable" prizes; however, you must pay a processing
fee for handling, customs duties or taxes, and you must send a
check or money order to them by overnight mail. The prize
usually winds up being small trinkets of minimal value, discount
coupons or vouchers, worth far less than what you paid.
Or, you might receive an e-mail informing you that your order
has been received and processed, and your credit card will be
billed for the charges. The trouble is, you haven't ordered
anything. They contacted you using bulk email, using inactive
return addresses which prevent you from refuting the orders by
email. They do provide a telephone number in the area code 767,
which is actually in the West Indies. They try to keep callers
on the line as long as possible, and you are reportedly billed
as much as $25 per minute. Be aware that your local telephone
company may bill for services provided by other companies, and
not be able to provide you relief.
Another current scam floating about the web offers you a cut of
stolen money from Nigeria that was stolen and they need your
help getting the money out of the country. They of course want a
cut of the money that they claim will be wired to your personal
bank account. You of course are expected to pay them their share
up front. The money however never arrives in your bank.
One group sends hundreds of thousands of unsolicited emails to
people directing them to web sites promoting the Mega$Nets and
MegaResource programs. When you visit one of their web sites you
can download copies of the software program which contains a
list of five names and addresses. The software program and web
sites direct you to send twenty dollars to each of five people
listed in the software in order for you to get yourself placed
at the top of the list of names. This is simply a variation of
the old fashioned chain letter. Actually, there are a lot of
chain letters floating about the web and all should be avoided.
Another email promises guaranteed Credit Card approval! One
group offered Visa cards to the credit-challenged "to put you
back in the mainstream of financial life in high style" at an
interest rate of only 4.9%. How? Through the magic of using
offshore banks in tax haven countries. There is however a $100
processing fee and $25 per month charge regardless of use.
Some people really believe that they have been selected to be in
the Internet Version of "Who's Who". This one started years ago
and was sent to every company executive in the country - They
will include your listing at no charge - oh, would you like a
copy? "Send $98 to us and it will be delivered to your
doorstep."
There is no way to adequately cover all the scams that permeate
the web. Before jumping into any of these "make a million while
you sleep" plans, use a little "due diligence" and check them
out. The money you save will be your own.

Reinventing Yourself and Your Company

If you're a small business owner there is an excellent chance that you've reinvented yourself at least once in your life.
When you think about it, there was probably a moment, an inspiration, an event, a conversation, or a pink slip, that caused you to start that new journey. And if you're a small business owner, it's also a safe bet that you've discovered you must keep reinventing your business, too.
All of this reinvention can never stop, because everyday the marketplace becomes less like a destination and more like a moving train. Indeed, the Hobson's choice for small businesses is reinvention or extinction.
Let's talk about reinventing your business, yourself, and the fact that there should also be a balance between the two.
In his book, "Creative Approaches For The Cost Effective Organization," Steve Martin says there are five generations of corporate growth:
1. Work. The entrepreneurial stage.
2. Sell. Focus on sales growth and market share.
3. Cut. Focus on efficiencies to drive the bottom line.
4. Buy. Acquiring assets to reach the next level.
5. Think. All actions are proactive as intellectual and financial resources focus on knowing the next best step, instead of guessing.
It's almost a natural law that a successful business will reinvent itself along these five generational lines.
But while you're reinventing your business, don't forget to do the same for yourself. Because each generation of a company's growth requires a different kind of manager.
As you're making sure that your personal intellectual growth isn't behind your company's progress, don't get too far ahead, either.
Unfortunately, there is no corresponding natural law to help keep your personal reinvention matched up with, and parallel to, that of your company. Consequently, keeping your personal intellectual growth in sync with your business requires constant attention and honest self-analysis.
Personal reinvention doesn't mean you go from being a surveyor to being a surgeon. It means that instead of being intimidated by technological advancements, you actually become a visionary expert on how to leverage new capability.
It means you go from knowing nothing about how an earthquake or a military coup d'etat on the other side of the planet could affect your business six months from now, to being pretty good at identifying local as well as global threats and opportunities.
Perhaps the best example is when you're able to delegate tasks that you once trusted only yourself to do, to the capable staff you've hired.
Sometimes circumstances require you to reinvent yourself whether you're ready or not. When that happens you can choose to be a whiny victim or embrace the change. But remember this: Only owners who embrace change can run and grow successful businesses.
Write this on a rock - Reinvention or extinction: the choice is yours.

Merlin was a wizard. No small credential that. But the most fascinating thing to me about King Arthur's mentor was that, according to legend, he lived his life backwards. He came from the future. In chronological terms, his life was going the wrong way down a one-way world. Poor Merlin. He already knew how things were going to turn out.
If Merlin showed up on your doorstep today would you want to know what he could tell you? Not me! Where would the fun be in knowing how your plans were going to turn out before you implemented them? Whether you're a hell-bent-for-leather entrepreneur with everything hanging in the balance on the validity of your vision, or a part-time practitioner taking a tiny chance in just one aspect of your business, wouldn't knowing the future be, well, unentrepreneurial?
Entrepreneurs are the modern-day wizards, but in a sort of reverse-Merlin way: We come from the past to influence the future. Like Merlin, we use what we have learned to know what's coming next. But unlike Merlin, we get to imagine and create what has never existed. Merlin had some pretty cool powers, but I would rather be an entrepreneur.
In our one-way world, entrepreneurs drive forward while always keeping the rear-view mirror perspective in focus. Soren Kierkegaard, the famous 19th century Danish philosopher, spoke to this when he said, "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards." Sounds like he knew us, doesn't it?
Now go pull that sword out of the stone. You can do it!

Magnifying Glass or Mirror: The Choice is Yours by Sandy Karn

A magnifying glass makes something look larger than it really
is. It makes it easier to see the finer details, however it also
distorts the image, especially toward the periphery.
Almost any child knows that it can concentrate a beam of
sunlight enough to start a fire. A true mirror reflects back an
exact image of what is in front of it, without distortions. It
is possible to produce curved mirrors that do distort the image.
Whenever we interact with another person, we have a choice as to
which of these tools we will use. Most people tend to pick the
magnifying glass. We look very carefully at everything the other
person has done in great detail, magnifying every misstep they
may have made. Many times we concentrate our attention
sufficiently to ensure a fiery confrontation.
On the other hand, when we look at our own behavior we tend to
use a mirror, a distorted mirror, that reduces or eliminates any
of our own missteps.
You can easily observe this tendency in almost any conflict
situation, whether it is a personal conflict in your own life or
a conflict in the news between opposing sides of an issue or
between nations. Each side is an expert on the harmful actions
taken by the other side. They can document every incident and
offer the most negative possible interpretation of it. They tend
not to see or to minimize the significance of their own actions.
This results in a distorted view of the situation and results in
maintaining or intensifying the conflict.
A solution is obvious. We need to change our choice of tools.
Ideally we would always use a true mirror to view our own
actions so that we will be actively aware of everything we did,
both positive and negative, and the impact those actions had on
others. At the same time, we need to observe the actions of the
other person or group through a clear lens that does not magnify
or distort.
If we really want to resolve the issue, we may choose to look at
the actions of the other side through a lens that somewhat
reduces their missteps, making it that much easier to reach a
solution.
Your goal:
To avoid magnifying the missteps of others while honestly
acknowledging your own actions in any conflict situation.
The result:
You will find it much easier to resolve (or even avoid)
conflicts, resulting in much less energy wasted on emotions and
attacks. You will be free to direct all that energy toward
making progress toward your objectives.
Your assignment:
When you find yourself in a conflict with someone, make sure you
are not using a magnifying glass to examine the other person's
behavior. Use a true mirror to observe your own behavior and a
clear lens to observe the behavior of the other person. If
necessary, minimize the other person's actions a bit, to enhance
the resolution of the conflict.

The biggest expense that an individual has is, payment of Taxes,
and not the mortgage or the credit card payment as we are made
to believe. Taxes play a major role in our every day lives. We

tax, property tax, mortgage tax, sales tax, energy tax and
withholding tax. Of course there are more but these are a few
examples.
There are federal taxes and there are state taxes, and you have
to pay taxes at different levels. You must have noticed that
when you purchase something from a store you pay more than the
listed price, as it has to be taxed. At places where income tax
is not charged, the sales tax is much higher to compensate for
it. States that levy sales tax sometimes give a refund or
discount at the end of the year when you file your taxes with
the IRS.
Your taxes are regularly deducted from your salary when you work
for a company or business. How much is deducted depends on your
salary and the number of people dependant on you. If you are
self-employed you still pay taxes but you calculate them
differently. Some people try to avoid paying tax by not showing
any income, but that can get you into trouble if you are audited
by the IRS and you may end up facing huge fines and a jail-term.
If you need to clarify your doubts about taxes and why you have
to pay them, surf the net for information. The IRS website
explains many things to you and also replies to your questions
by phone or e-mail. They have a section on frequently asked
questions, which can be very helpful. Where tax is concerned,
don't hesitate to clarify doubts about something that is such an
important and expensive aspect of your life.

1. Need. Most of us NEED money, or we wouldn't be looking for a

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter... Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not financially do the same. EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the income. The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it! I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements, redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over sixty pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what? On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education. I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time, after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations, write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle...I am here, it's 2003 and I am a very happy stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services, products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
