TIP of the Month

Zipped Files

A zip file is basically a "package" of one or more compressed files. If you download a lot of software, you'll run across these all the time. They are not difficult to work with. You'll need an "unzipping" program in order to access them, something like Winzip or Stuffit is a good choice. Once unzipped, you simply run the install program (if there is one) and you're all set. In fact, Winzip will automatically run the installation program for you if it finds one!

You can download Winzip from: http://www.winzip.com

It is a shareware program, so if you use it you should pay for it. It doesn't have an expiration though, so you can "evaluate" it for as long as you like. If you have Windows XP, you don't need a program-just double click a zipped file to open it.

A menu will appear from which you can save individual files to your computer. Just click & drag or copy the file you want and drop it in the desired location. It's that easy! Also, in the left-hand column there is a link to "Extract all files".

This will open a wizard to guide you through the extraction process. You can choose where you want the files to go, etc.

A few years ago, zipped files were a real pain to work with, but today they are a piece of cake. BTW - never open a file with a ..zip extension if you get one in your email. Odds are it is a virus that will reek havoc with your computer.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "WOMEN, MEN…Wake Up, Smell and Drink Some Coffee…Fourteen Ways to Succeed Through Networking" By Francine York, http://www.modernopportunity.com

Feel like you need more contacts to expand or start your business and don't know how to make those important connections? There's an easy answer to your dilemma…drink coffee!!! No, not in your kitchen; but at the myriad networking opportunities for women in business as well as those wanting to start a business. Men: this is for you too.

So, what is all the hullabaloo about Networking? The most important thing you should know about the concept is…it works! All those business cards floating around can sometimes find their way to a person/business that needs you! Some examples from my limited sphere: 1- I networked with a person who sells insurance; after talking with her, I decided to ask her to give me quotes on my homeowners and auto insurance. She saved me $500.00 per year! And she got a new client.

That's the great thing about networking…there's a give and take, a Yin and Yang…you get a new client; and sometimes, you become a new client. Another person I networked with had products I was interested in buying and I had advertising opportunities she needed…voila…a perfect match! And on and on.

Morals of the story:

1. Always have plenty of business cards with you

2. Make sure your biz cards reflect who you are and what you can offer others; if not, make up new ones!

3. Make sure the cards are up to date and have your current email address, web site and phone #.

4. If you can afford it, there are many inexpensive promotional items you can have imprinted to give out at these events. (Such as: magnets, pens, pencils, key chains etc.

5. Attend as many networking events as you can; many are free or low cost and take place either during the day or in the evening.

6. Try to utilize the services / products of those representatives you have met; remember, they might do the same for you.

7. Write notes on the back of the cards you receive so that you can remember who the person is and what he/she does etc.

8. At most networking events, attendees are permitted to bring flyers, pamphlets and free samples. Make sure you ask first!

9. Some events allow people to donate a door prize; consider that as another means of "spreading the word".

10. An essential element of networking is to follow up a day or two after the event; call, send an email or write a letter to everyone you spoke with and remind them who you are and what you can offer them.

11. Don't be intimidated by speaking to strangers; everyone is there for the same thing…to find clients as well as finding services/products that they can utilize.

12. Part of networking is to join as many organizations and groups as possible; some of these will allow you to come to networking events for free at least at first.

13. Network by placing your card in any "fish bowl" that allows it.

14. Last, but not least, keep drinking that coffee! Remember…you don't schmooze, ya lose!!

"Network continually -- 85 percent of all jobs are filled through contacts and personal references." -- Brian Tracy

"It's not who you know. It's how well you maintain your Rolodex(R)." -- Patricia Fripp

"Make a list of 200 prestigious, influential, and powerful people with whom you want to work, play, grow and do business." -- Mark Victor Hansen

"Networking is simply the cultivating of mutually beneficial, give and take, win-win relationships. It works best, however, when emphasizing the 'give' part." -- Bob Burg

Francine York is the publisher of the Modern Opportunity newspaper and website (http://www.modernopportunity.com). Both vehicles offer low cost advertising opportunities as well as vital business information; they are a source of business opportunities, products and services for those desiring to go into business as well as new entrepreneurs. Visit the site and sign up for its' free monthly ezine. Ms. York also hosts a business opportunity EXPO which is open to the general public. Exhibitors offering a wide variety of money making opportunities, services and products come together in one venue to offer information about all aspects of this industry. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Warning Signs by Bob Osgoodby

Con artists have been around since the beginning of time, and are always willing to take advantage of another "hot prospect". But every scam has "Warning Signs" and a little common sense should prevail so you do not fall prey to them. Let's examine a few we get by email everyday.

"Guaranteed Winner" - they state - "You're going to get one of these top five prizes, guaranteed!" In this scam you normally send some information, and either return it by email or fill out a form on a web site. They require that you supply your telephone number to be eligible. You will then be contacted by a telemarketer who confirms that you have been chosen for one of the five "valuable" prizes; however, you must pay a processing fee for handling, customs duties or taxes, and you must send a check or money order to them by overnight mail. The prize usually winds up being small trinkets of minimal value, discount coupons or vouchers, worth far less than what you paid.

Or, you might receive an e-mail informing you that your order has been received and processed, and your credit card will be billed for the charges. The trouble is, you haven't ordered anything. They contacted you using bulk email, using inactive return addresses which prevent you from refuting the orders by email. They do provide a telephone number in the area code 767, which is actually in the West Indies. They try to keep callers on the line as long as possible, and you are reportedly billed as much as $25 per minute. Be aware that your local telephone company may bill for services provided by other companies, and not be able to provide you relief.

Another scam still floating about the web offers you a cut of money from Nigeria that was stolen and they need your help getting it out of the country. They of course want a cut of the money that they claim will be wired to your personal bank account. You of course are expected to give them a "good faith" deposit up front. The money however never arrives in your bank.

"Complimentary Vacation Package" - this one has been around for quite awhile, but has now found its way to the web. It starts off with "Congratulations! You will be our guest in Orlando, Florida, home of Walt Disney World, for 4 days and 3 nights. All compliments of major Vacation Resort Developers." Reading it, you might feel you have won a contest. In actuality, this is not the case. It is a high pressure sales campaign designed to sell you a "timeshare" vacation package. And, if you decide not to attend their meetings it isn't free. Another variation promises deeply discounted vacation packages. You pay for a package that seems great on the surface, but in reality, it is either third rate accommodations or doesn't exist at all.

One group sends emails to people directing them to web sites promoting their programs. When you visit one of their web sites you can download copies of their program which contains a list of five names and addresses. The software program and web sites direct you to send twenty dollars to each of five people listed in the software in order for you to get yourself placed at the top of the list of names. This is simply a variation of the old fashioned chain letter. Actually, there are a lot of chain letters circulating about the web and all should be avoided.

You might receive an email promising guaranteed Credit Card approval! One group offered Visa cards to the credit-challenged "to put you back in the mainstream of financial life in high style" at an interest rate of only 4.9%. How? Through the magic of using offshore banks in tax haven countries. There is however a $100 processing fee and $25 per month charge regardless of use.

Another spin on this credit scam is for low mortgage rates to refinance your home. They have you fill out an application which contains a lot of personal information including your Social Security Number. You have just given someone enough information to steal your identity.

Some people really believe that they have been selected to be in the Internet Version of "Who's Who". This one started years ago and was sent to every company executive in the country - They will include your listing at no charge - oh, would you like a copy? "Send $98 to us and it will be delivered to your doorstep."

There is no way to adequately cover all the scams that permeate the web. Before jumping into any of these "make a million while you sleep" plans, use a little "due diligence" and check them out. If you see any of these "warning signs", run, don't walk to your nearest delete button. The money you save will be your own.

Re-Energize Your Brain by Kevin Eikenberry

Doesn't it make sense then to do some regularly scheduled maintenance on our brain - a tool far more valuable than the rest?

It happens to all of us. We get in ruts, we build routines and we develop habits, and in doing so we often don't use our brain the way we could. It is one of our most valuable and precious resources and it is time to re-energize it.

Here then are eight ways you can re-energize, re-invigorate and do some ongoing maintenance for your brain.

1. Ask Why? Our brains are wired to be curious. As we grow up and "mature" many of us stifle or deny our natural curiosity. Let yourself be curious! Wonder to yourself about why things are happening. Ask someone in the know. The best way to exercise our curiosity is by asking "Why?" Make it a new habit to ask "why?" at least 10 times a day. Your brain will be happier and you will be amazed at how many opportunities and solutions will show up in your life and work.

2. Laugh. Scientists tell us that laughter is good for our health; that it releases endorphins and other positively powerful chemicals into our system. We don't really need scientists to tell us that it feels good to laugh. Laughing helps us reduce stress and break old patterns too. So laughter can be like a "quick-charge" for our brain's batteries. Laugh more, and laugh harder.

3. Remember. Get out an old photo album or high school yearbook. Your brain is a memory machine, so give it a chance to work! Spend time with your memories. Let your mind reflect on them and your mind will repay you in positive emotions and new connections from the memories to help you with your current tasks and challenges.

4. Do a puzzle. Some of us like jigsaw puzzles, some crossword puzzles, some logic puzzles - it really doesn't matter kind you choose to do. Doing puzzles in your free time is a great way to activate your brain and keep it in good working condition. Do the puzzle for fun, but do it knowing you are exercising your brain.

5. Play. Take time to play. Make time to play. Play cards. Play video games. Play board games. Play Ring Around the Rosie. Play tug of war. It doesn't matter what you play. Just play! It is good for your spirit and good for your brain. It gives your brain a chance to think strategically, and keeps it working.

6. Learn something new. This one might seem obvious. Yes, we capitalize on our brain's great potential when we put it to work learning new things. You may have a specific topic for work or leisure that you want to learn more about. That's great. Go learn it. If you don't have a subject in mind right now, try learning a new word each day. There is a strong correlation between working vocabulary and intelligence. When we have new words in our vocabulary, our minds can think in new ways with greater nuances between ideas. Put your mind to work learning. It is one of the best ways to re-energize your brain.

7. Write to be read. I am a big proponent of writing in a journal to capture ideas and thoughts. There is certainly great value in writing for yourself. I continue to find that my brain is greatly stimulated by writing to be read. Writing this article (and at least one per week) is one example and writing in my Blog is another example. There are several situations and audiences for which I write each week. There are many benefits to me in doing this. The greatest isn't visibility or marketing; the greatest is what it does to expand my brain's capacity. Find ways to write to be read - in your church newsletter, by writing things for your kids to read, by capturing the stories of your childhood (see number 3 above), starting your own blog or whatever - just write to be read.

8. Exercise. We all know that exercise is important for your physical health. Our brain is a part of that body, so increasing our blood flow brings more oxygen to the brain - oxygen that is the fuel for that beautiful brain. When I exercise I get fresh ideas. When I exercise I feel better physically and mentally. Just add "improving my brain" to the list of great reasons to exercise.

This is a short but powerful list. I encourage you to apply at least one of these approaches starting today. Look at your to do list and your calendar. Put it on your list in ink.

Your brain will thank you in the form of new ideas, greater stamina, more passion for your tasks and in so many more ways.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Trash to Cash…Where to Get Things in Your Own Home to Sell by Lynn Dralle, The Queen of Auctions, Updated 5/17/05

Where can you find merchandise to make all that money on eBay? We have been very fortunate in our eBay adventures because our Grandmother (my mom's mom) Cheryl Leaf owned and operated an antiques store for 52 years! 52 years…Can you imagine how much stuff we still have? We are probably the exception not the rule. But think about it, most Americans are pack rats. The first place to look for merchandise is……in your own house.

Get a big box and start a pile. I tell people that you will be amazed once you start doing your research what sells and what doesn't! The exception is the RULE. You just never know-I am shocked every day at what sells and what doesn't. I was listing some incredible antique majolica jardiničres the other evening and when doing my research I found that they only sell in the $20 range. I had a new creamer/sugar in the shape of a trailer and Nash automobile that was going for $44. Kitschy, unusual and strange often sells for more than authentic and antique.

In General you should be looking for the following:

1. Items you don't use or need anymore
2. Things in good condition
3. Items that are still in the original box (MIB-mint in box)
4. Anything with a brand name or signature
5. New or like new clothing-mint with tags is great (MWT)
6. Unique or unusual things
7. Items that were very expensive originally
8. Shabby Chic, Vintage and Antique items
9. Items made in the USA, Europe and sometimes Japan
10. Stay away from items made in Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan

Go through your home and look in your:

Garage

Toys, Sports Equipment, Hunting & Fishing items, Golf is really hot right now, Car Parts (a woman at my last LA Class told me about a friend who got $8,000 for a rare car part!) etc.

Attic

Look for antique clothing, ephemera (paper goods like Victorian scrap, letters and postcards)--you would not believe what old magazines can bring. My ex-husbands skateboard magazines from the 1970's sold for $20 to $100 each! Old toys, collections, anything that has been put away for a while. Kitchen

China, Dinnerware, Silverware, Appliances, Refrigerator Dishes are desirable now, Anything that has a brand name or is signed, Old Tins, etc.

Bedrooms

Your Closets:

Look for clothing with brand names that is in good to excellent condition, brand name purses, scarves, signed costume jewelry, bakelite (an early form of plastic). Your kid's closets: Clothing that is gently worn, brand names like Baby Gap, Old Navy, Gymboree, Tommy Hilfiger (I just sold a Tommy size 7 boys denim shirt with new tags for $16.49-I paid $7.99 at TJMaxx) etc. all do well, NWT (new with tags) always does well.

Your kid's toy cabinet: Look for brand names and anything you can put back in an original box. Little Tykes, Barbie and Thomas the Tank Engine are all good. Trains, Cars, Dolls, Books, Airplanes etc.

Bathrooms

Old perfume bottles, medical bottles and vintage (1970's) cosmetics. We sold a Faberge Dusting Powder Set from the 1970's in the original box for $25.00. Wild!

Bookshelves

Old Books do sell well. Look for unusual titles, author signed and first editions. Also, look for magazines. China Cabinets

Look for antiques, glassware/china/porcelain that is signed. Stemware like Waterford does great. Lladro, Precious Moments and Boyds are some popular collectibles now.

CD/Cassette/Record Cabinet

Yes even old LP's and CD's sell well on eBay. I just sold a James Bond Casino Royale Album for $31.00!

DVD/Video Case

Same with videos and DVDs. It all just depends on the demand. A girl in one of my classes was making $1000 a month selling her old videos and CD's at online auction.

Do your Research.

Once you have your big box or pile of items it is time to do your research. This is the fun part! Go to eBay and do your completed auction research.Click on the blue advanced search button in the upper right hand corner. When the next screen comes up type in key words and make sure you click the completed listings only button. If you do a search by what is currently up for sale, you will have no idea of the value of what you are trying to buy. Most buyers only bid in the last few seconds and these results will only show up in a completed auction search. By doing this completed auction research, you can find out what your item has sold for from other sellers and you can strategize a maximum price to pay. eBay makes this data public record for the past two weeks. This information is invaluable.

Type in as few key words as you can. For example, for the Majolica jardiničres I typed in Majolica planter. Look at as many of the listings that are close to what you have. You can learn a lot by reading the descriptions. If you have decided to list your items, now is the time to take down notes. My auction tracking sheets-I sell-are perfect for this. You can find my record keeping books here. Write down the best category and it's number, write down any interesting facts and anything that will make your listing better.

As another example of research, for the creamer and sugar, I typed in creamer trailer and up came about 10 listings. From my research into the cream and sugar I found that they were made by Fitz & Floyd and were very desirable. I wrote all this down on my tracking sheets. I also wrote down the price range of what they sold for. Again, I was shocked to find that they were selling in the $40 range.

Happy Selling!

I hope that gives you some good places and ideas to get started. Clean up your home and make money! GOOD LUCK and Happy Selling. http://www.thequeenofauctions.com/index.html

Hazy, Lazy Days of Summer by Bob Osgoodby

Warm-weather months are a fun and busy time. It's time to cleanup the barbie, plant your flowers, and maybe take a trip to the beach. The cold weather is gone and the lazy, hazy days of summer are upon us. It just seems that so many things have been added to our plate, we have little time for anything else.

But wait! Does that include the business you have worked so hard on during the winter? Unfortunately for some it does. It's like the race car driver, who speeds around the track and gets a lead of his competition, but then decides to coast the last few laps. Guess what - he is going to be passed.

A lot of people virtually take the summer off from their online business, and this is an opportunity for you. While they are taking 2 steps back, you can leapfrog over them and get the customers they might have gotten. This is not a new phenomenon, and is as old as the web itself. Online business typically slows down during the summer months. But who is slowing down? It is usually those who work the web part-time in the evening. Now when it gets dark early, this is easy. But when the days are longer, it seems there just isn't enough time to do everything else, and also take care of business.

If you are serious about developing your online business, you must have the discipline it takes to continue. It's awfully easy to think you'll get it done tomorrow, but unfortunately, your customers will not wait for you to get motivated.

Rose Hay sums it up beautifully in her ads. She says "Remember, an Opportunity Doesn't Go Away, It Just Goes To Someone Else." How true - here is someone who has her act together, and will capitalize on the inaction of others.

Now is the time to renew your marketing efforts. Can you combine those lazy, hazy days with a renewed effort? If you can, the lost opportunities of others might just come your way.

Might you slow down a bit? Sure, if you do it right, and remember your short term and long term goals. Maybe you should investigate advertising in publications you hadn't tried in the past. You should consider running multiple ads with different copy in the ones you are already using. How about using an auto-responder in those ads. This will ensure you get back to an inquiry right away, and you can do the follow-up at your leisure.

Why not put a form on your website(s) to handle inquiries? Through the use of checkboxes, you can immediately categorize your potential customers requests. By using a mail package such as Eudora, you can automatically respond with a "canned" response that is tailored to their request.

Will some of your prospects also be running at a slower speed? Of course, and this is why you must redouble your efforts.

Don't forget that thousands upon thousands of new prospects get web access every day. They are hungry for information, and might just be looking for the type of opportunity you offer. These "Internet Newbies" are like a fertile field that you can harvest during the summer. Bitten by the prospect of earning money on the Net, they are viable candidates that you will lose if you don't vigorously pursue them.

I know that with press of things we have to do it is easy to slack off. Much of your competition will succumb to those "Hazy, Lazy Days of Summer", and if you take advantage of their inactivity, you just might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

A personal message from the publisher...

How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.

My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you; so email me anytime and you will receive a personal reply from me.

And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter... Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care for my grandchild.

First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it! I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements, redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over sixty pages with more on the way.

I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!

To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education. I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time, after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations, write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.

My story comes full circle...I am here, it's 2003 and I am a very happy stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services, products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!

Thank you for your interest in Modern Opportunity... Business Opportunities for Long Island and the world!
