TIP of the Month

Have you ever needed a symbol or some other special character
like the degree symbol, the small square checkbox, the copyright
symbol, etc.? Well, they're tucked away in a folder that, once
you know where to look, is easy to get to and use.

Here's How:

Click the Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools, then select
Character Map.

You'll be presented with a screen that has lots of different
symbols. When you click (and hold) a symbol, it gives you an
enlarged preview of it.

Should you save your scanned images as a gif or jpg file?
"The rule of thumb is that graphics compress better in gif
format, and pictures look much better in jpg format," says
my Web site adviser Chris Maher. "A gif file has only 256
colors, so you would not want a picture of a person to be
compressed with that limited palette. For the best quality,
you might consider scanning them as tif files, which are
uncompressed. But they will be much larger than.jpgs, and
unless you need to work on the images quite a bit you
probably don't need the extra information they contain.
Don't scan the images with too high a resolution. The more
dpi you scan at, the larger the file. But do test your
scans, printing a few of them out after you have saved them
so you can get a feel for what you can expect."

Monitor Goes Black by Bob Osgoodby

Windows has a Power Management setting that will shut your
monitor off after a specified amount of time. If you don't like
when it's shutting the monitor off, you can change it by doing
the following:

1. Hit the Start button, Settings, Control Panel (XP users: hit
the Start button, Control Panel, then go to Performance and
Maintenance link). Then, open the Power Management icon.

2. Look for the "Turn off monitor" drop box. Select the amount
of time you want the computer to wait before shutting off the
monitor, or tell it not to shut the monitor off at all.

Incidents involving malicious computer code have spiked this
year, according to computer security firm Sophos, which
attributes the sharp rise to growing numbers of professional
criminals who are using the Internet to make money.

The company said it has tracked nearly 8,000 new varieties of
malware in the first six months of the year, an increase of 60
percent over the same period last year. Graham Cluley, senior
technology consultant at Sophos, noted that the trend in malware
has been toward Trojan horses and away from viruses and worms.
Trojan horses can allow hackers to access information on a
compromised system or to take over the system completely. It is
these Trojans, said Cluley, that criminals are using to make
money from unsuspecting users.

Although Microsoft products remained at the top of the list of
most frequently targeted applications, Cluley said malware is
also being written to take advantage of Linux, UNIX, and Mac
systems.

Until recently, spam has been an annoyance,
a definite load on your email system and network,
a waste of productive time and money,
but we are about to find that the cost could get much higher.

Spam blockers are now becoming a necessity rather
than an optional email utility,
the reason is that spam is becoming
much more dangerous.

Now, just like you,
I looked into spam blocker software mainly because
I didn't like being constantly bombarded with
various anatomy enhancing messages or ironically,
advertisements for spam blocker software itself.

A skeptical person may even wonder if this whole problem
is not rooted in the business model of lesser than
honest spam blocker software companies -
but that's another article.

Whatever the root cause, one fact is true,
the spam problem is turning into a far more costly
and dangerous issue that could effect you in profound ways.

The evolution of spammers into 3 new and very dangerous areas
had me scrambling to get serious about finding spam
blocker software and techniques that are
more effective than what I've been using in the past.

The 3 new dangers that threaten you are:

1. Rise in hijacked and spoofed email addresses means that someone can
make it look like their spamming campaign is coming
from your computer. The impact is that you could
have your internet connection terminated or put on hold by your ISP
- all without your knowledge.
This raises the issue that spam needs to be blocked,
ideally, in both directions -
to ensure you are not an unwilling
accomplice to a malicious spam campaign

2. Convergence of viruses and spam.
You are no doubt aware of the nasty rise in viruses
that end up impacting your PC
in a number of harmful ways including slowing you system down,
crashing your system, logging your keystrokes,
stealing private information,
redirecting you to porn sites, etc...
Now, in the past the incidence of a virus
travelling through email would be fairly predictable.
That has changed with viruses working together with spam.
An example is the SoBig virus whos
purpose was to create a broad spamming infrastructure
by planting code on unwilling participants PCs
creating a mass threat to email security.
This is just the tip of the iceburg,
spam will increasingly be used to spread
and activate very dangerous viruses -
for this reason alone, you need to be looking at spam blocker software.

3. Mix of spam and phishing.
If you haven't heard of phishing before,
it refers to the misleading emails you get dressing
themselves up to look like legitimate emails
to get confidential, often financial, information from you.
Some common examples are the Paypal or Bank emails
that claim you need to login with your private information
to verify contact information or update account information.
In reality, this is a malicious third party that steals your private information
and can cause you MAJOR identity and financial problems.

So what can we do about this?

It's time to get serious about spam blocker software -
as a first line of defense. Regulation isn't working,
while it is getting tougher
and tougher to quickly decide what is spam and
what is not in your inbox and as we have seen,
the stakes are getting higher.

There are hundreds of shareware, freeware and otherware
solutions on the market, the time for experimentation is over.
In my trials of over 12 different spam blocker solutions,
we found incredible variance in the reliabiltiy,
effectiveness leading to our finding that there were
only a small handful of serious spam blocker solutions.

Data Recovery By Barry Stein

Every person who uses a personal computer will eventually face the
challenge of data recovery. Computer hardware and software
can be temperamental from time to time.
Hard drives and other mechanical components of personal computers
and servers do not last forever, and when they
fail recovering your data can be difficult, time consuming and costly.

If you are working diligently away on a document or
spreadsheet in Microsoft Office and the power goes out,
you may still be able to recover the documents
you were working on when the lights come back on.
This type of data recovery is relatively easy and straightforward.
Software manufacturers recognize that power outages are inevitable
and unpredictable and most office applications
incorporate what is known as autosave features.
At set intervals, the documents you have open
are saved to a cached file.
They remain in that cached state and
should be accessible once your power is restored.
Simply opening Microsoft Word or Excel
will usually bring these documents back.
For instance, when you open Word after a power failure
or a software error, you will be presented
with a document followed by the word recovered in parentheses.
This is the document you were working on
at the most recent autosave point.
You may still lose a couple minutes
worth of work this way, but it sure beats having
to go back and retype the entire document.

If the recovered document does not appear automatically,
search your hard drive for files ending with tmp.
Look for one created close to the time
of the power failure or software error and open it.
This is most likely the document
you had open at the time.
If this method of data recovery does not work,
you may need to follow the steps listed below.

Of course not all data recovery is so easy and so straightforward.
If you delete a file accidentally, it is a simple matter
to recover it from the recycle bin.
Once you empty the recycle bin, however,
things become more difficult.
The deleted file still resides on your computer somewhere,
but the pointer that tells the program where to find the file is now gone.
There are various software tools available that promise
to help recover deleted files, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Some of the major players are Norton, McAfee and Computer Associates.
There are a great many smaller vendors as well.

Even if all these products fail to recover your data,
you may not be completely out of luck.
Data recovery services specialize in
recovering data from failed and corrupt hard drives.
These data recovery services have tools and equipment
not available to the general public.

Government and law enforcement forensic teams will often
make use of these advanced data recovery techniques
to investigate cases of computer crime.
Businesses also will turn to a professional data recovery service
to recover mission critical data from damaged hard drives.

It is important to choose a reputable firm any time
you need to have data recovery services performed.
The firm you choose should be able to
provide references from previous clients. You should make sure to follow up
with the references they provide.

The cost for the data recovery service will vary
according to the type of equipment and the difficulty of the job.
You should get several estimates
to make sure you are paying a fair price for the service you receive.

letters in the subject and body of the email. At first I thought
they were a new form of poetry or a secret code known only to
the UN, Aliens, or the CIA.

A personal message from the publisher...

How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.

My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential business opportunity web site. Feel free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter... Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care for my grandchild.

First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it! I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements, redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over sixty pages with more on the way.

I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!

To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education. I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time, after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations, write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.

My story comes full circle...I am here, it's 2003 and I am a very happy stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services, products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
