Downloading Software
After downloading software and running the setup program you
might be able to delete the setup file.
If it was a .ZIP file, you're normally safe. If it was an .EXE
file, make sure it's only a setup program and not the actual
program itself (in most cases, it's only a setup program). The
way most setup programs work, is it installs the program and
files to where they belong then it just sits there, taking up
space.
Make sure that if something happens to your computer you'll be
able to re-download the software should you need to re-install
it. If there is any question about the future availability of
the software, I recommend that you save the file to a floppy
disk, zip disk, or CD-R.
On another note, if you really like a certain program, it pays
to copy the installation program. For example, I use an older
version of Netscape Composer for some of my work on the web and
love it. I don't like the "new and improved" version at all, but
that is a personal preference.

Tip of the Day...Dirt Cheap Software by Bob Osgoodby
We all want to save money, but we should be smart about it. When
you get an email offering you Windows XP for dirt cheap, don't
fall for it. The same companies are offering discount prices on
other software as well. There are basically two problems. Up
front they tell you it will take about six weeks before you can
expect delivery. First, you have no guarantee you will receive
working software, and if you don't, you have little if any
recourse.
Second, These are bootleg or OEM copies from Eastern Europe. You
won't get any support and in most cases you won't be able to get
updates.
As much as I hate to say it... go to a local store and pay full
price.

Server Logs - The Secret to Analyzing Your Traffic

Analyzing traffic to a site is a key factor in tweaking search engine
optimization and marketing campaigns. Determining how people get to your
site is critical. Surprisingly, few sites take advantage of the data available
on their servers.
Typically, there are two server tools available to you. Server logs are on your
server and analyze site activity. The log keeps track of the files created on the
server, the number of times there is a request for the file, where the hit came
from and the exact phrase typed in by the person accessing the page of the site.
Every system is different, but these basic elements should be included.
The second tool, a traffic analysis program, is pretty standard for most hosting
companies, but you may have to ask them to turn it on. The programs analyze the raw
data from your server and convert it into fascinating charts, diagrams and statistics.
Most of the information is overkill. You have to be careful not to get overwhelmed by
numerous ways to look at the data. Try to focus on the following information:
1. What sites are sending you visitors?
2. What search engines are sending you traffic?
3. What keyword phrases are people using to find your site?
4. How often are major search engine indexing robots visiting your site?
As you access the data, you are going to find some very surprising things.
Actually, you are probably going to be stunned.
Initially, you are going to be amazed when you see which keyword phrases that
are sending traffic to your site. Many of the keywords will not match your meta
tags. Instead, they will be a combination of various keywords on a particular page.
This is reflection of the fact that search engines mix and match your keywords as
they see fit. So, should you change your meta tags to reflect the phrases shown in
the data? No. The data you are seeing typically reflects keywords with little
competition. Since you are already getting traffic from them, keep focusing on your original goals.
In looking at your data, the second key piece of data is identifying where the
traffic is coming from. This data often falls under the "referrer" heading. By
reviewing the data, you can see what search engines are producing data for you.
If you are running advertising on a site, you should also be able to track the campaign.
The final area to analyze is the robot visit information. Depending on the program,
the robot information may appear under ?robots? or ?user agents? headings. Robots
are programs used by search engines to index web sites on the net. In reviewing your
data, you should be able to determine how often the robots are coming to your site.
If at all possible, make sure you add new content to your site before the next visit.
The robots for the top search engines are Yahoo Slurp, Google Googlebot and MSN MSNbot.
In Closing
Analyzing the traffic to your site is a key element to marketing your site. The more you
know about your customers, the more you can cater to their needs.

Tip of the Day
If you leave your computer on for extended periods during the
day, you might be concerned about the amount of electric power
you are using. My computer is on 24/7 as I have a number of
"automatic canned replies" that are sent out depending on the
content of the email received.
Windows has a Power Management setting that can shut your monitor
off after a specified amount of time.
Select the "Start button/Settings/Control Panel" (XP users:
select Start/Control Panel, then go to "Performance and
Maintenance"). Then, open the Power Management icon.
Look for the "Turn Off Monitor" drop box. Select the amount of
time you want the computer to wait before shutting off the
monitor, or tell it not to shut the monitor off at all.
When you want to use your computer, simply move your mouse and it
automatically turns back on.

You can get your name involved by giving the business what it
needs to run the contest. You can contribute prizes, money,

Five Steps to Achieve Anything By Tim Rutt
To accomplish anything in life, you will need a road map to achieve and realize your dreams.
That roadmap is goal setting. Yet, according to recent research 97% of the US population
does not set goals.
Most people don't set goals because they have never learned how to do so, or afraid that
their goal won't be reached. The fact is you have two choices: either you decide to set
your own goals and the journey will start, or you decide not to and you will soon
realize that you have not achieved what you wanted.
But you can set your own goals - and achieve anything - by using the following five steps:
1) Set specific, measurable goals. Don't just say, 'I want to lose weight,' Focus on how
much weight you want to lose. And the same goes with any business or personal goal.
2) Make sure your goals are realistic. It's important to set goals that you can achieve if
not you will give up on the idea that setting goals is the most important technique to help
you achieve your dreams.
3) Lay out your plan of actions that will determine how to you reach your goals. Once you
have set your long-term goals, set up your short-term goals that you should complete if
you are to reach your lifetime plan. Finally set a daily to do list of things that you
should do today to work towards your lifetime goals.
4) Periodically review your plans, results and modify them to reflect your changing
priorities, experience and accomplishments. Goals can change over time, so don't be
afraid to revise them.
5) Celebrate. Make sure you include rewards as you reach milestones.
Celebration is part of the success.
Goal setting is important; just ask Jack Welsh who once said, "Control your destiny or
someone else will."
The two most important parts of reaching goals is one, creating goals that are in line
with your values and two, staying motivated. The good news is people can learn the how
to do both create goals that they want to achieve and stay motivated long enough to achieve them.

Food For Thought...Do Something Nice By Dr. Kevin Nunley
Nothing promotes your business like good word of mouth. When
someone has a good experience with your company and tells other
people about it, their word of mouth is the most powerful form
of advertising known.
A friend or associate telling you a product or service is good
is vastly more effective than even the most expensive network TV
commercial. We believe what friends tells us and often act on
their advice.
I don't have any scientific proof that this is true, but I
strongly suspect that doing something nice for someone is a
major source of good word of mouth.
Make a point of doing something nice for a customer or prospect
every day. This is especially rewarding when that person is
someone who emailed you, sent you a letter, called you, or
visited your store. These "active" people are the same ones who
will take time to tell others about their experience.
In recent years when businesses have been cutting back and
making employees work longer hours, random acts of kindness may
be getting harder to find.

File Association Anxiety Tip of the Day by Bob Osgoodby
If your JPEGs open up in your web browser, but you want them to
open in a photo program, there is an easy way to fix this.
1. Open Explorer (right-click the Start button and select
Explore) and head to a file you would like to either associate
with another program or get associated with a program for the
first time.
2. Once you get to the file, hold down your SHIFT key and
right-click it. You will be presented with a menu that gives you
an option to Open With.... Select that.
If you're using XP, you may not even need to hold down the shift
key to get this to work. XP usually give you an Open with item
on the right-click menu with a sub-menu full of options. If you
want to change the association, you'll need to select the Choose
Program option. "XP Open With picture"
3. This will open up a screen where you can tell Windows what
program to open that particular file with. Choose the program
and make sure the little "Always use this program to open this
type of file" checkbox is checked. Hit OK.
That should do it. Windows will now use the new file association
when opening the file you just worked with.

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma. 
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter... Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it! I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements, redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over sixty pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education. I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time, after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations, write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle...I am here, it's 2003 and I am a very happy stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services, products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
