TIP of the Month

Autocomplete

Some of us like having our browser remember passwords and
usernames for us. All that's required when you go back to the
site is a quick double-click of the username box. Instantly, a
little drop down box appears with your username in it. Just
click that username and it automatically fills in both the name
and the password for you. Cool huh?

What do you do however, if you have an entry or two that is
incorrect? You know, maybe you accidentally typed your address
wrong once, and now every time you type your address in, you get
the little drop down with the incorrect address sitting there.
What can you do?

Arrow down to the offending entry and tap your Delete key - easy
as that.

Finally, it should go without saying that using this
autocomplete feature is not a very secure way to use your
computer. If anyone else has access to it, they can easily get
into any of your password protected sites plus gain access to
your personal information.

Spam - How Much Will It Cost Your Business? By Shelley Lowery

According to a recent study conducted by Ferris Research, a market and
technology research firm specializing in messaging and collaboration,
Spam will cost U.S. businesses over $10 billion in 2003.

Spam not only clogs our servers and in-boxes, but it also costs us hours
and hours of lost time in productivity.

Although the estimated cost of Spam focuses mainly on lost productivity,
this picture may be much broader than you realize.

Some of the more popular email providers, such as AOL (America Online), Yahoo!
and Hotmail, are now utilizing filters to cut down on Spam. These filters are
dumping Spam and/or bulk mailings into a separate location. Although this may
cut down on Spam in your in-box, these filters are also dumping some
legitimate email messages.

What's more, some hosting services not only filter the email messages, but
they're also blocking entire hosting companies. For example, the blocking
host may have gotten some Spam complaints about a few marketers that host
with ABC hosting company. (Keep in mind, ABC hosting company may host thousands
of sites.) Rather than block the offending marketers, the blocking host decides
to blacklist the entire ABC host.

What this means is if you try to contact someone and their hosting company has
blacklisted your host, your email will not go through -- it will bounce right back to you.

If you suspect you may not be receiving all of your email, contact your host
and ask them if they're using Spam filters or have blocked entire hosting companies.

How Much Will Spam Cost Your Business?

How much time do you spend sorting through the Spam in your email each day? Add
it up sometime -- I'll bet you'll find you spend a lot more time than you even
realized -- time that could have been spent on your business.

If you're publishing an ezine or sending out any form of opt-in mailings, how
many subscribers are actually receiving your mailings? Most-likely, not nearly
as many subscribers as you may think. How many lost sales has this cost you?

How many messages, such as information requests, customer support requests, etc.,
have you not received due to filtering?

How many messages have you replied to that your customers or potential customers
have never received due to filtering?

As customer service says a lot about your business practices, how many customers
will you lose?

The list goes on and on. But the point is this, Spam is costing you dearly.

Protecting Your Email Address

So how can you defend yourself? Well, it depends on which side you're on --
how to protect yourself, and/or how to make sure your messages are getting through.

In order to protect yourself against Spam, you first need to understand how your
email address is obtained.

There are many unethical businesses online that collect and sell email addresses.
They use robots that travel from link to link in search of email addresses. Their
customers are led to believe that these email addresses belong to individuals who
want to receive mailings. However, much of the time, this isn't the case.

Never purchase a list of email addresses from anyone other than a reputable company.
The only company I can recommend is Post Master Direct.
http://www.postmasterdirect.com

To protect your email address from these robots, instead of displaying your address on
your site, use a feedback form. Not just any type of form, but a form that doesn't
display your email address within the hidden form fields. The only form I can
recommend is Master Feedback. You can pick up a free copy here:
http://willmaster.com/master/feedback/index.shtml

Anytime you're filling out a form online and you're asked to provide your email
address, make sure you review the site's "Privacy Policy" to ensure that your
email address will not be sold or shared with a third party.

Protecting Your In-box

To protect your in-box, you can use a Spam filtering software program. Although
there are several available online, the best one I've found is Mail Washer. This
program will enable you to view all the email on your server without actually
downloading it into your email program. Once you've reviewed your messages, you
can create filters and bounce the Spam messages back to the sender. Although you
can pick up the program free, consider supporting the developer and register the
software for a small fee. http://www.mailwasher.net

Avoiding the Spam Filters

If you're sending out a mailing to an opt-in list, there are a few steps you
can take to make sure your message won't trip the Spam filters:

1) Avoid using trigger words, such as Spam, fr*e, r*move, etc. Although the
list is far too broad to list here, you can learn more by reading the
following articles:

Spam Filters Run-Amuck by Timothy A. Gross
http://www.iprofitsystems.com/articles/spamfilters.html

CLIP & SAVE guide to avoiding Spam filters by Debbie Weil
http://www.imakenews.com/wordbiz/e_article000094161.cfm

2) Avoid using JavaScript within your messages.

3) Avoid using "bad" words.

If you'd like to ensure your messages are getting through, consider
opening email accounts with the popular providers. You can send your
mailings to these accounts and monitor their reception. If your mailings
land in the dump, you can make some adjustments or even contact the company.

If you would like to test your outgoing email messages to ensure they
won't trigger a Spam filter, Ken Evoy offers a great service called
SpamCheck. This free service will enable you to send a copy of your
publication, or any email message, to a specific address and it will
return a report of possible words that will trigger the Spam filters.

Send your publication including the subject and body to:
spamcheck-websource@sitesell.net

Conclusion

The Spam problem continues to get progressively worse. Although there
isn't a simple solution to the problem, the information provided in
this article should assist you in not only avoiding Spam, but also
avoiding the filters for your legitimate mailings.

It's really a shame we're even in this position. However, we cannot
allow Spam to continue to infiltrate our businesses. We must take the
necessary steps to ensure our success.

Wanted-to-Buy Advertisements
" Get your kids involved in your eBay business

" This Week's Question - When should I use a reserve?

Wanted-to-Buy Advertisements

Several newsletters ago I discussed placing "Wanted-to-Buy" ads.
I put an ad in my local newspaper, on Craig's List (
www.CraigsList.org )
and in the "Antique Trader."

It was very interesting to see what
happened and how the three different venues generated three different
ways of contact. The local newspaper ad brought phone calls, the Craig's
List people used email, and the "Antique Trader" was all by mail.
My local newspaper ad did generate some interest. I received about ten
phone calls and I talked to quite a few people that had dinnerware sets.
However, after doing my research I decided not to buy them. It was also
kind of awkward not having a store or other business location to meet them
in. I wasn't comfortable driving clear out in the county to someone's home
to examine their items. I probably won't place another ad like this unless
I can figure out a business locale that I could use to look at merchandise.
The Craig's List ad brought in three email inquiries. I liked the email inquiries
better than taking the phone calls. These sellers were pretty savvy (probably
checked prices on eBay!) and they wanted too much for their items. However, this
was a free listing so I will definitely do it again when I need merchandise.

Right now my office is so full that I just bought seven shelves at Costco to
hold it all! My grandmother would say "You are loaded for bear!" I think this
means that you use all your ammunition when loading a shot gun to shoot a bear.
I definitely have enough merchandise (ammunition) to last me a long, long time!

The "Antique Trader" ad was my favorite. Probably because I got five actual letters
in the mail with photos and lists. Just like my grandmother used to get in the 1970's
and 1980's when she was advertising for merchandise! It was fun. I bought a vase
from one gentleman and it hasn't arrived yet. I also negotiated to buy two wonderful
dinner sets from a former antiques dealer in northern California. She and her
husband are going to drive the dishes out to the desert and deliver them to me
in December. I am paying $750 for the two sets and will let you know how it goes
in a future newsletter. I am hoping to double my money on these sets.

I hope that gives you some ideas. Please let me know if you have tried any
wanted-to-buy ads and how they have worked for you!

Get your kids involved in your eBay business

Last Saturday morning at 5:55 am the door to my bedroom opened and there was
my six year old daughter, Indiana. She was holding her clothes and said "Mommy,
I am going to garage sales with you today." I said "Why?" She said "Because it
is fun and I want to spend time with you and Mor Mor" (Swedish for Mother's
mother and this is what my kids call their grandmother). How could I say no to that?
So, at 6:45 am off we went, three generations of antique dealers. My grandmother
started me in the business at a young age and she would have been so proud to
see us all carrying on her tradition. It was a Saturday full of sales. It
really is garage sale season here in the desert and we went to over 20 sales
that morning. We stayed out until noon and I couldn't believe how good Indy was.
She never complained and got really quick at jumping out of the mini-van. We had a blast!
She had $5 of her own money to spend and she ended up getting some Christmas
presents and a few knick knacks for her room. At one sale, a woman was selling
Christmas cards. Indiana is very serious when she shops and she finally decided
on one to a "Dear Mommy" and parted with 50 cents for it. That was so sweet-it
made me want to cry!
There was a church sale at the Greek Orthodox Church and it started at 9 am.
Normally church sales do not open early so we were shocked to find that they
had let people in early when we arrived at 8:45. I missed some really great
items. There were still some bargains to be had and I made a big pile. Indy
came in really handy because she was able to help me by keeping her eye
on all of my boxes.
We learned our lesson at that sale and there was another church sale at the
Armenian church that was scheduled to start at 11 am. It was only listed in
the Penny Saver and not in the newspaper, so we thought there was a good
chance it wouldn't be so crowded. They had signs and balloons all over but
no start time listed. It was only 10:30 am but based on what had just
happened at the Greek Church, we decided to go by early. I typically
don't do this and it goes against my upbringing (I am a rule follower-not
a rule breaker!) However, we went. The doors were open and there were a
lot of people inside working so we started shopping. One lady said "Do you
work for the church?" and we said "No, we are here for your sale." She said,
"Oh no, it doesn't start for 1?2 of an hour" and I replied "We saw all
sorts of signs with no time listed" and she said "Fine."
I found some great things and made a pile on one of the tables. My mom
walked by my pile and thought to herself "Oh no, someone beat us to all the
great stuff!" We laughed about it later because it was mine! Anyway, I was
all done shopping and Indiana was over looking at the jewelry table. She
picked up a Christmas tree pin (She loves Christmas because her birthday is
in December) and showed it to me. I turned it over and it was signed WEISS.
It was only marked $2 so I decided to buy it. I typically don't ever look at
costume jewelry but because of Indiana's sharp eye I bought about ten other
pieces that day.
When we got home, I researched the brooch/pin and found one exactly like
it on eBay that had sold for $86! Wow -- what a score! I told Indiana that
I would give her 20% of whatever it sold for as a finder's fee. She is saving
up for her birthday visit to Disneyland and her goal is to make $100 by
December 11th. We had so much fun watching this auction together and it
ended up selling for $152.50! Amazing. I paid her $30.50. She is hooked on
eBay and has decided to go with us every weekend. As an end note, I think
our pin sold for double the other one for several reasons. I put brooch in
the title and the other seller only used pin. I also put Eames in the title
and once again this is a very searchable term. Also, it is the perfect time
of year to sell a Christmas tree pin.

One of the reasons I decided to share this story with you is because it
is never too early to get your children involved in your business. If you
don't have children, involve other family relatives or even your friends.
eBay is a very fun business and you can never have too much free
(or very low cost) help. Also, it teaches such a great work ethic
at a young age and your children will learn by example. Some of the
odd jobs that my kids do for me and what I pay them include:
Unpacking the boxes after a Saturday of garage sale shopping $1.00
Polishing Silver $1.00
Washing a complete dish set with windex $1.00
Unloading the mini-van after a Saturday morning $1.00
Sorting eBay items by category-ie. Books, plates $1.00

Technology News 1/10/06 Spammer Hit With $11.2 Billion Fine

A court has slapped a Florida spammer with an $11.2 billion
fine, setting a new precedent for fines against spammers, though
the ruling is unlikely to have much effect on the volume of
spam.

Internet service provider CIS Internet Services, which provides
Internet service to parts of Iowa and Illinois, had sued James
McCalla for sending more than 28 million e-mail solicitations
that fraudulently used the CIS domain as the return address. In
addition to the fine, McCalla is forbidden from accessing the
Internet for three years. Robert Kramer III, owner of CIS,
welcomed the ruling, calling it the "economic death penalty,"
though he acknowledged that he does not expect to receive any of
the money awarded.

John Mozena, co-founder and vice president of the Coalition
Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, said this and other
rulings against spammers have not had a significant effect on
the total volume of spam, which he estimated continues to be
about two-thirds of all e-mail traffic. What is needed, he
argued, rather than current laws, which only forbid deceptive or
fraudulent spam, is a prohibition against all spam

Marketing Your Business Successfully By Tina Valiedi

Marketing is the gasoline that runs any organization's engine. Without
a clear-cut marketing plan your endeavor in business will be a failure.
Marketing is a huge part of the foundation of any successful business.
Overlooked, it can be the reason a business is unsuccessful. The large
corporation became successful due to proper marketing and having a product
or service that appeals to the public. Marketing consists of two basic
rules of thumb. Find a need and then fill that need.

Formula for marketing begins with finding a need and then creating a product
or service that fits the need. Knowing who has the need or problem becomes
your target market. It doesn't make sense to target the plumbing industry
if you sell electrical parts but so many businesses do just that. Another
scenario that contributes to a business downfall is trying sell something
to everybody. Find out who needs your what you offer, the size of the
market and carry a diverse line to meet their needs. If you can solve
their problem completely, you'll develop a loyal following;
a steady stream of customers.

You can ensure that steady stream of customers by paying attention to
two areas. First, determine if you can meet your customer demands without
a heavy upfront investment. Second, never promise more than you can deliver.
A good rule of thumb: Over deliver and under promise.

Cash flow gives you the money to market and marketing brings in your cash
flow. Important to make sure they are working together. A bad buying
decision of too much product reduces working cash flow when that product
doesn't' move out the door. Realistically anticipate your customer
needs and purchase accordingly. Tying up your cash in product can
lead to disaster before your business gets the chance to take off.

When you have your marketing plan in hand of the need and how you will
fill it be sure not to over-inflate what your company can do. Promising
a customer a timeline that cannot be achieved may get you the business
the first time, but it definitely will not lead to repeat business. It
is always better to have enough time built into a service to allow for
unforeseen problems and when it comes to products they're as good
as the name on them.

Over deliver, under promise and focus on knowing about your target market
and your customer needs. This approach gives a better and more effective
way to market your and gauge your business growth.

And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild.

First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.

I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!

To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.

My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
