TIP of the Month by Bob Osgoodby

This is one of my favorites - it's the .LOG function.
Open up Notepad by going to Start / Run and typing in "notepad"
(or Start / Programs / Accessories / Notepad) and type:

LOG at the top of a new, blank document. You just made a log file!

A log file is just like a journal or a diary in a way. From then
on, every time you make an entry in that file, Notepad adds a
time and date stamp for you. You'll see the stamp the next time
you open the file. (Try it-save the file somewhere, then open it
up again. Pretty neat, huh?)

Some find this useful in various cases, such as keeping track of
changes you made to something, how many times something
happened, logging phone messages, or even just keeping a
journal. If you already have the log open and want to add
something to it, just hit F5.

you may or may not be able to sell. A drop-shipper is a middleman who is willing to
permit you to buy an individual product, and then they will put your business name
on the return address of the product package and handle the actual delivery for you.
By utilizing a drop-shipper, you can speed product delivery to the client without

THE IMPORTANCE OF CASH FLOW TO YOUR SUCCESS

EBay provides tools for both buyers and sellers to rate one another. The speed
of delivery is one of the most important factors that sellers are rated on. By
providing quick delivery, your buyers will give you a good rating -- and more
shoppers will bid on your products.

EBay recently purchased PayPal.com to help facilitate purchases for their buyers
and sellers, and they have integrated the two systems together.

Unfortunately, getting the money from your PayPal account to your personal account
generally takes four days. Even with a merchant account, the time gap is nearly the
same. This time gap expands the turn-around between the transaction and delivery of
the product unless you take action to speed the process.

If you were doing high volume, you would want to minimize the handling of a transaction
to reduce the chance for a foul-up and to increase your ratings within the EBay system.
But how can this be accomplished?

MANAGING CASH FLOW

While you could rely upon credit cards to get the job done, it is not something I would
recommend. Paying credit card interest rates to process your customer's purchase, is an
unnecessary burden. Instead, put a sum of money into a dedicated bank account with a
debit card attached to it. When you verify a transaction has been credited to your
PayPal account, then use your debit card to immediately process the order with your drop-shipper.

But, how can you do it this way on a tight budget?

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO THE RESCUE

Let me ask you this. Do you have a 401(k) account?
Experts advise that you not touch your retirement savings for anything other than
retirement income. That is good advice. Fortunately, it is possible under special
circumstances to acquire loans against your 401(k) accounts.

Beginning in 2002, even the self-employed small business owner with no employees
could open his or her own 401(k), called a solo-owner 401(k), and borrow from it
just as employees with big companies can. Weigh this option against the others
available to you. It only makes sense to take out a loan rather than to take a hit
in heavy taxes and penalties for drawing your retirement money early. Seriously,

Taking transactions over the Internet can be profitable but it can also bankrupt a
small business. Accepting online transactions means accepting additional responsibilities
as a merchant. These responsibilities include knowing and understanding your risk
exposure and your liabilities.
You are 100% liable for all losses sustained. And, if there is an excessive amount
of fraud or unauthorized transactions through your merchant account, your fees and
discount rate could be raised, your funds could be held, or your merchant account
could be closed. Be aware that authorization codes only mean that the cardholder has
funds available for that transaction and does not verify the sale.

When possible, also use CVV2 (Card Verification Value). Ask the customer for the CVV2
information on the back of the credit card. If that person cannot supply you with that
information, that is a sign that you may not be dealing with the actual cardholder.

Be Aware of High Risk Countries

When receiving an order from an International country it is recommended that you obtain
the card issuing bank information to verify the legitimacy of the person giving you the
credit card. Indonesia, Nigeria and other areas of Africa, and Singapore are the highest
risk areas for accepting credit card transactions as most fraud is generated through these areas.

Minimize Risk

To help minimize your risk exposure, take the time to learn about AVS
(Address Verification System) if your merchant account is set up with this feature. If the
address does not match, you may not want to ship any product without verifying through
the card issuing bank.

Also be aware that AVS does not work with International addresses. Always check the
AVS response codes.

Best Practices

Be alert for transactions with several of the following characteristics:

" * First time shoppers
" * Larger than normal orders
" * Orders consisting of several of the same items or orders composed
of big ticket items
" * Orders shipped "rush" or overnight
" * Shipping to International addresses
" * Transactions on similar credit card numbers
" * Orders shipped to a single address but made on multiple cards
" * Multiple transactions on one card or multiple cards with a single billing address but
multiple shipping addresses.
Ask the customer for the preprinted numbers above or below the first 4 embossed account numbers,
name of the card issuing bank and for the customer service phone number on the back of the credit
card. If they cannot provide this information, more than likely this is not the actual card holder.

Site Data Requirements

Card Associations have mandated that merchants, who store account holder data (account information,
cardholder information, and transaction information) in an electronic commerce environment, keep this
information in a secure manner. This is to ensure that merchants are adequately protected against
hacker intrusions and account data compromises.

Hacker break-in's can have potentially dangerous consequences on merchants. There could be a disruption
in your merchant service and loss of consumer confidence with your business.

" * Do not store CVV2 information.
" * Destroy all unnecessary data.
" * Use Network Security tools to protect website (firewalls).

The Single Most Important Ingredient For Internet Marketing Success By John Hostler

I'm sure you think I'm going to tell you it's your list...or maybe Big Gun JV partners,
or something along those lines. Yes, those are certainly valuable and can help you become
incredibly profitable. But that's not even close to what I am talking about.
The single most important ingredient in Internet Marketing success is "focus". Focus? "Whoa,
John you're nuts." Well, that may be, but focus is life or death in this game. Focus is what
separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and the successes from the wannabe's.

Internet Marketing often highlights the brilliant successes and rarely speaks to the
massive failure of 90+ percent of its business owners. Most of those 90% are basically
what I refer to as the churn and burn crowd. Why? Because they don't focus.

They buy the latest and greatest "thingamajig" or get involved with the next "Super
Fabulous Mega Pre-Launch", go at it for a couple of weeks, don't see the massive riches
they were promised, and move onto the next great thing. Churn and burn.

Although I will agree that the Internet is awash with garbage programs that offer money
for nothing; there are many good programs out there as well. And yet people without focus
get involved with quality programs, fail, blame the product, and move onto the next one.

Now, I am not in any way taking shots at the focus impaired, because I too am guilty of
distractions. In fact, I am probably two steps from ADHD. But I know that I will not win
at this game if I do not make a plan, follow the plan, and execute.

Here are some simple little strategies I use to stay on track and keep focused -

1)I make a schedule using Outlook (use whatever calendar you want) and follow it as much
as possible. I set appointments and tasks and all that happy jazz and if something comes
up which takes precedent over my previously scheduled to-do, I reschedule.

2)I turn off my email for certain periods of the day and shut down my messenger programs.
It's brutal being shut off from the outside world but when I have that stuff open I can get
lost for hours..."Oh, I better get back to this email" or "Hey, Jerry's IM'ing me".
Trust me, step away...it works wonders.

3)This one is more for the visually oriented like me. I keep a notepad next to my laptop
and when I complete a task I scratch it off. I know this isn't very tech friendly in this
day and age, but seeing a to-do get scratched off gives me a feeling of accomplishment and
motivates me to move on to the next item.

4)When I start one of my to-do's I do not move to another until I finish; or until I run
into a roadblock that forces me to leave it as an open item. Some times things happen and
you simply can't finish what you started at that very moment. But for the lion share of the
tasks where this isn't the case, finish what you start.

5)I limit myself to a certain number of purchases per month. I love toys, gadgets, and new
fangled programs that will blast this and submit that...but when I get a new toy I have to
go at it immediately, figure it out, and play with it. It costs me hours when something is cool.
Those hours could likely be spent making money so it's best to keep this to a minimum and
eliminate the distractions.

This is just a hint at some of the things you can do to keep from getting distracted and staying
focused. You have to stay with your programs and see them through. You need to make a plan,
implement it, and stick to it. Eliminate your distractions. That kind of focus and determination
will allow you to succeed on the Internet in ways you might not even have thought possible.

Technology News 1/10/06 Virus Writers Turn To Apple

A new computer virus that targets the Apple OS X operating
system has been identified.

Although the malicious code is not sophisticated--it requires
users to "download the application and execute the resulting
file," according to Apple--and has been labeled a low-level
threat by McAfee and Symantec, it may represent the first virus
in circulation that attacks users of Apple's operating system.
Ray Wagner of Gartner said that the virus is "not really news"
except that it is "the first OS X malicious content in the wild
that's been noted at this point."

The bug spreads primarily by sending itself through Apple's
iChat instant messaging program to those on an infected
computer's buddy list. Several security firms have updated their
threat profiles to include the new virus.

The late Norman Vincent Peale was a controversial preacher who
burst into public consciousness with his best-selling book, "The
Power of Positive Thinking". He believed that ordinary people
could become really quite remarkable when they start thinking
that they can do things, and when they believe in themselves,
they have the secret of success.

So many people trying to start a business, don't believe in
themselves. They look for advice from self proclaimed "gurus"
and try very little on their own. Many will tell you about the
power of duplicatable systems and, while much of this is true,
it is not always necessary to re-invent the wheel.

A duplicatable system does not demand that you memorize a
script. It basically means that you know your product, and have
seen what has worked for others, and follow their lead. If you
add your own ingenuity and your sales efforts, you will do even
better.

If you aren't the creative type, it really is best to follow a
tried and true system. But if you are, you are selling yourself
short if you don't branch out and develop some of your own
techniques. If you believe in yourself as well as your product
you have a winning combination.

If you look back in history, you will see many examples of
ordinary people who have achieved extraordinary results. Many
of the best known people who have left their mark in the pages
of history, failed a number of times on their climb up the
ladder. This is not a "history lesson" so we won't go into the
specifics, but there is no doubt this is true.

These people all had something in common. They had self
confidence as well as tenacity in achieving their goals, and a
sense of fulfillment. Most successful people have a "can do"
attitude. While failure is always a possibility, they don't
become fixated on avoiding failure and approach life with an
upbeat attitude.

You must however have a goal clearly in mind. This can be
referred as a vision of what you want your life to be. It's
like the parent asking their child what they want to be when
they grow up. If you don't have a clear vision as to where you
want to be, your odds of success are greatly diminished. You,
and only you, can decide where you want to go on your travel
through life.

But you can't sit on the top of a hill and think pleasant
thoughts all day. You have to come down to the real world and
set your goals and objectives. You have to set priorities and
have a plan to meet them on a regular basis. You must have a
plan of action, and follow it. In other words, "plan your work
and work your plan". While things come up to delay you at times,
you must meet your goals each day. You must be organized, and
have a system in place to attain your objectives. Without one,
your ship will certainly founder. Excuses don't count. Leave
these behind you. Build your own personal image of success.

Do you spend any time honing your skills? Community involvement
is a great way to do this. Get out and meet people. Do some
public speaking - anything to allow you to practice your
techniques when dealing with people. Most sales are not product
driven. If people believe in you, you are more than halfway
home to making a sale.

If you are fired with enthusiastic ideas and allow them to
dominate your thoughts, you will find that new horizons will
open. As long as your enthusiasm lasts, so will new
opportunities. Don't wait for the world to beat a path to your
door - it won't. Search out and seek new ventures.

Allow yourself to think outside the boundaries. Remember,
failure is merely a stepping stone on your road to success, and
if you exercise positive thinking, you will reach your objective.

A personal message from the publisher...

How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.

My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity
Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential
business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting
and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel
free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to
assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you;
so email me anytime and you will receive a personal
reply from me.

And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild.

First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.

I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!

To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.

My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
