Saving Pictures

Just yesterday, I had a phone call from someone who wanted to
copy a picture from a web page and send it to a friend. While
the answer is basically simplistic, if someone has never done
it, it can be a challenge.

Now doing this on the phone, I had her right-click the image and
select "Save Picture As..." from the little menu that pops up.
Now that was the easy part. When we went to attach it to her
email, I told her what to do, and to select the file she had
just saved.

Try as she might, she couldn't find the file. OK - back to the
web page. This time I had her write down the directory and file
name she was saving. Back to the email and it went without a
hitch.

Unless you do something all the time, it is best to have paper
and pencil available when doing something new. That way you
don't have to trust your memory, when you are 5 or 6 steps away
from what you did.

Advertising and marketing has become one of the largest and most

Smart business owners know that providing great service to their
patrons is an essential ingredient to their overall success.
They also recognize that without a certain level of revenue they
will not stay in business. Unfortunately, many people think that
selling and service are two distinct activities and mutually
exclusive. So, where does the service part of the job end and
where does selling begin in a retail store?

I believe that service and selling work hand-in-hand to create
the entire experience for a customer. According to Webster's
dictionary, one definition of service is "to be ready to help or
be useful".

You can actually improve your service by applying a few
customer-focused selling techniques because effective selling is
an integral component of delivering great service. It's all in
the approach you use.

First of all, recognize that many consumers anticipate
sub-standard service from businesses. While this may appear
discouraging, it actually gives you an excellent opportunity to
distinguish yourself from many of your competitors. Here's a
personal example;

I recently ventured into a medium-priced fashion retail store. I
was greeted immediately by the two employees who were working,
and as I browsed through the store, one of them approached me to
make sure I was finding what I was looking for. At no time did
she make me feel that I HAD to buy, she simply commented on some
of the items I was considering. I eventually ended up spending
several hundred dollars because of the attention I received in
the store.

Personalized service is also a form of selling. An employee who
shows interest in her customers is more likely to sell more and
have a higher average dollar per transaction than her coworker
who simply processes a customer's order. Creating a connection
with people creates trust.

My wife and I once traveled to New Orleans for a one-week
vacation and decided to dine at a restaurant owned by a
well-known chef. During our conversation, the server learned
that we were on holidays and made us feel extremely welcome.
When the Chef arrived that evening she made arrangements for us
to meet him and prompted me to buy one of his cookbooks so he
could sign it. The service we received that night sold us on
returning again before we left New Orleans. Although we had
dozens of restaurants to choose from in the vicinity, we decided
to go back to this one because we knew the service would be
great. Now, many years later, my wife and I still talk about
that restaurant and our experience.

There are a few local retail stores I visit regularly because
they work at creating that connection with their customers.
They make me feel important which prompts me to return. Show
interest in your customers. Strike up a conversation. Talk to
them. Although it sounds simple, my experience has taught me
that most retailers do not engage their customer and create a
personalized experience.

Suggestive selling is not pushy. I remember shopping for cuff
links a while back. I had selected a pair in a certain men's
fashion store and was wandering around while I waited for my
wife. At one point, I stopped in front of a mannequin that
displayed a particularly unique tie. As I gazed at the tie the
salesperson said, "I can get one for you if you'd like." His
casual and comfortable approach made it easy for me to say
"yes". He then asked, "Would you like a suit to go with that
tie?" I laughed and told him that I had enough suits in my
wardrobe. He nodded and said, "We have some new raincoats that
will protect your suits. Would you be interested in seeing them?"

Even though it was evident he was trying to increase the size of
the sale, the way he positioned it indicated that he was
actually trying to help me. Plus, his casual, yet professional
and polite approach encouraged me to buy more than I had
originally intended.

In another situation in a completely different store, the sales
person took the initiative to suggest a few additional items
that complemented the ones I was considering purchasing. As a
result, I ended up buying a few more items that I had budgeted
for.

Professional selling is about helping people make educated
buying decisions. Professional service is about creating a
memorable experience for your customers. Combine the two and you
can quickly entice people to return while increasing the amount
they spend each time they frequent your business.

1-Justice Department Casts A Wide Net For Information

Subpoenas obtained through the Freedom of Information Act
indicate that the U.S. Justice Department is seeking Internet
usage data from at least 35 companies in its efforts to defend
the 1996 Child Online Protection Act (COPA) against court
challenges.

One of the subpoenas sparked a legal showdown between the
government and Google, which challenged the request for millions
of records of Internet searches. In that case, the government
significantly scaled back its request, which the judge ruled was
allowable. Other companies that received similar subpoenas are
Comcast, EarthLink, AT&T, Cox Communications, Verizon
Communications, Symantec, and other makers of computer security
products. The Supreme Court has ruled twice that COPA is likely
unconstitutional, and the government will go to trial in October
to defend it. David McGuire, spokesman for the Center for
Democracy and Technology, expressed concerns echoed by other
critics that the government is seeking large amounts of
information to defend a questionable law.

2-Amazon Wants To Sell Downloads

Online retailer Amazon.com is reportedly considering selling
downloads of movies and TV shows that buyers would be able to
burn to DVDs.

Internet retailers as well as entertainment companies have been
looking for a business model that allows online sales of movies
and TV shows yet also benefits the studios. A number of services
currently offer downloads, but Amazon's would be the first to
allow consumers to keep the videos they download. The retailer
is said to be negotiating with Paramount Pictures, Universal
Studios, and Warner Brothers on the deal, though officials at
Amazon would not comment on the rumored service.

Amazon's ownership of imdb.com, which it bought in 1998, is
expected to give Amazon an advantage competing with other movie
and TV download services as well. The Web site, which stands for
Internet Movie Database, has become the leading movie site on
the Web, passing Yahoo Movies in usage, according to comScore
Media Metrix.

A personal message from the publisher...

How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.

My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity
Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential
business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting
and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel
free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to
assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you;
so email me anytime and you will receive a personal
reply from me.

And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild.

First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after a year of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.

I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!

To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.

My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
