Tip of the Month: Start Menu Programs
by Bob Osgoodby
If you're like me, the first thing you do when you first sign on the
computer, is check your email. If you use an offline mail reader such as
"Eudora" or "Outlook Express", why not start that program automatically
when you start the computer, and set it to automatically get your mail.
You of course can do this with any program you wish. To start a program
each time Windows starts
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.
2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab and then "Customize."
3. Click Add, and then click Browse.
4. Locate the program you want to start, and then click it.
5. Click Next, and then double-click the StartUp folder.
6. Type the name that you want to see on the StartUp menu, and then click
Finish.
7. If Windows prompts you to choose an icon, click one, and then click
Finish.
And, if you don't use an offline mail reader, why not start your Web
Browser at sign on - that way you are a click or so away.

Strategies To Fight Email Spam By John Tourloukis
If you are a business owner and you rely on email, spam is going
to be a major concern. How you address it can make a big difference
in employee efficiency. Email spam has been a nuisance and has gotten
even worse over the last several years. Email spam slows down server
performance and can eat away at storage. Cleaning all those bad messages
out of your inbox is time consuming. The easiest way for viruses to
spread is via email. Having a strategy to deal with email spam and
viruses threats is essential for any business to survive and be
productive. You can limit the negative impact to your business by
having policies and guidelines in place.
Tips to avoid getting email spam:
* If you have a company web site, use a contact form that the web site
visitor can fill out. Some spammers use robots that crawl web pages
looking for email addresses. Your web site designer should be able to
help you with this.
* When signing up for forums, products and services use a free email or
throwaway account like hotmail or Yahoo mail.
* When signing up for offers be careful what boxes you check although
technically not spam you may get a lot of email offers you do not want.
* Never reply to an email spam message, this just lets them know that
your account is active.
* You may want to use a throwaway email address if you post on newsgroups
or forums.
These measures may help to reduce spam, but if you have an old email address
you may want to change your email address or deploy a spam filter system. There
are several choices for anti spam systems you could buy software that runs
locally on your PC to filter the spam, but this can be expensive, does not
prevent virus infection, and is not a good choice in a networked environment.
Managing individual machine spam software is inefficient.
If you have limited technical resources you can outsource you email spam
filtering to a hosted anti spam and virus solution provider. Spam filter service
providers colocate their spam and virus filters in data centers with redundant
power and network connections. You will need to change your mail exchanger on your
dns servers to point to the service providers spam filters. Your service provider
will then scrub your email for spam and viruses. They then forward your email to
your mail server minus the spam and viruses. This gives you a few extra layers
of protection. In the event of a network outage or server downtime your email is
held and is delivered when the network or your server is available minus the
virus and spam. Spam filter services also scan for viruses; this adds another
layer of defense to the virus software already running on your network.
If you have an organization with more than one hundred email boxes investing in your
own spam filter appliance is the most cost effective solution if you have the technical
expertise to manage the system. A spam appliance sits in front of your email server
and blocks spam and viruses. The price of the spam appliance will depend upon your
number of users, amount of mail and storage requirements.
Fighting spam is no longer be a losing battle if you have a good strategy to deal with
the threat.

Summer Doldrums by Bob Osgoodby
Warm-weather months are a fun and busy time. It's time break out
the barbie, plant your flowers, and maybe take a trip to the
beach. With the price of gas, most people however will be
staying pretty close to home, but the cold weather is gone and
the lazy, hazy days of summer are upon us. It just seems that so
many things have been added to our plate, we have little time
for anything else.
But wait! Does that include the business you worked so hard on
during the winter? Unfortunately for some it does. It's like
the race car driver, who speeds around the track and gets a lead
of his competition, but then decides to coast the last few laps.
Guess what - he is going to be passed.
A lot of people virtually take the summer off from their online
business, and this is an opportunity for you. While they are
taking 2 steps back, you can leapfrog over them and get the
customers they might have otherwise gotten.
This is not a new phenomenon, and is as old as the web itself.
Online business typically slows down during the summer months.
But who is slowing down? It is usually those who work the web
part-time in the evening. Now when it gets dark early, this is
easy. But when the days are longer, it seems there just isn't
enough time to do everything else, and also take care of
business.
If you are serious about developing your online business, you
must have the discipline it takes to continue. It's awfully
easy to think you'll get it done tomorrow, but unfortunately,
your customers will not wait for you to get motivated.
Remember, an Opportunity Doesn't Go Away It Just Goes To Someone
Else.
Now is the time to renew your marketing efforts. Can you
combine those lazy, hazy days with a renewed effort? If you
can, the lost opportunities of others might just come your way.
Might you slow down a bit? Sure, if you do it right, and
remember your short term and long term goals. Maybe you should
investigate advertising in publications you hadn't tried in the
past. You should consider running multiple ads with different
copy in the ones you are already using. How about using an
auto-responder in those ads. This will ensure you get back to an
inquiry right away, and you can do the follow-up at your
leisure.
Why not put a form on your website(s) to handle inquiries?
Through the use of checkboxes, you can immediately categorize
the requests of your potential customers. By using a mail
package such as Eudora, you can automatically respond with a
"canned" response that is tailored to their request.
Will some of your prospects also be running at a slower speed?
Of course, and this is why you must redouble your efforts. Don't
forget that thousands upon thousands of new prospects get web
access every day. They are hungry for information, and might
just be looking for the type of opportunity you offer. These
"Internet Newbies" are like a fertile field that you can harvest
during the summer. Bitten by the prospect of earning money on
the Net, they are viable candidates that you will lose if you
don't vigorously pursue them.
I know that with the press of things we have to do it is easy to
slack off. Much of your competition will succumb to the "Summer
Doldrums", and if you take advantage of their inactivity, you
just might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

In The News: Committee Kills Net Neutrality Bill
The House Energy and Commerce Committee has killed an amendment
designed to guarantee net neutrality. The amendment would have
prevented Internet service providers from delivering different
content at different speeds based on content providers' having
paid extra fees.
Supporters of the amendment, including Microsoft, Amazon, and
Google, argued that the Internet was built on ideas
contradictory to the notion of paying fees to have content
available to consumers. They called on Congress not to drop the
issue but to "enact legislation preventing discrimination"
against certain content providers. Opponents of the amendment,
including cable and phone companies, suggested that the
landscape of online content, including such material as
movie-quality video, could be available to consumers if content
providers paid a surcharge for it.
Joe Barton (R-Tex.), chairman of the committee, commented that
net neutrality is "still not clearly defined" and that he doubts
the dire predictions of the amendment's supporters.

Cable vs. DSL by Bob Osgoodby
Cable is touted as being much faster than DSL (Digital
Subscriber Line) service, or is it?
Let's examine some background information. Cable Internet works
by using TV channel space for data transmission, with certain
channels used for downstream transmission, and other channels
for upstream transmission. Because the coaxial cable used by
cable TV provides a much greater bandwidth than telephone lines,
a cable modem can be used to achieve extremely fast access to
the Web..
Cable technology is based on the concept of shared bandwidth.
With DSL, the connection is yours and not shared, and you tend
to have a more constant speed. With shared bandwidth the speed
fluctuates depending on the number of subscribers on the network.
Let's examine a typical shared bandwidth facility as used by
cable companies. Someplace in near proximity to where you live,
a hub is installed and all cable subscribers in your area go
through that hub. Each person gets a piece of that bandwidth.
During quiet times when there is little Internet use, your speed
is good. But, as more people sign on, the speed degrades.
Now, let's use some hypothetical numbers. Let's say the hub can
easily accommodate 100 simultaneous users doing average things
such as email or surfing the web. But the cable companies
typically overbook a hub figuring that everyone won't be using
it at the same time. During the busy times of the day you could
have several hundred users all competing for that same
bandwidth. When this happens your speed can significantly
degrade.
DSL does not use shared connections and the connection is solely
yours. DSL depends on copper wire to transmit and receive data.
This is a severe limitation, and if the cable connection is not
overbooked, the cable will be faster. When the cable service is
running at optimum speed, it is typically twice as fast as DSL
using copper wire. DSL access is usually utilizing the same
phone equipment your home or business was wired with during the
initial construction many years ago.
But, enter the world of fiber optic. In many areas the phone
company is replacing the old copper wire with fiber optic cable.
The speed dramatically increases when fiber optic is used. Fiber
can connect homes to the Internet at speeds many times faster
than the old DSL using copper wire or cable shared access.
We recently switched from cable access to fiber optic service
(FiOS). It's about the same price, but the increase in speed is
dramatic. While the phone company claims FiOS to be about 3
times faster than cable, due to the congested hub in our area,
our experience shows it to be about 5 times faster.
You're going to hear hype from both the cable companies and the
phone companies. Is one service the best for everyone? No. If
you live in a rural area with few cable subscribers, that might
be your best bet. DSL might not be available to you depending on
your distance from the phone companies central office. If you
live in a congested area you might be tied into an oversold
cable hub and you can see your internet access slow to a crawl.
If your DSL will use the old copper wire, it will be slower than
typical cable access. But if your connection uses fiber optic,
that seems to be a clear winner.
Installation of cable is easy. A technician comes to your house
and when he/she leaves, your service will be up and running.
Installation of DSL used to be a "do it yourself project" and
many times turned into a nightmare. Times seem to be changing
however, and when our FiOS was installed, it was hooked up and
running before the installer left. They also provided a high
speed router so we could connect more than one computer to the
network.
There are a lot of variables to be taken into account. If cable
or DSL is not available in your area, you will have to suffer
along with dial-up. My recommendation is that if you have cable
and copper wire DSL, cable is usually your best bet. But if you
have fiber optic available, FiOS is the winner hands down.

How To Stop Unwanted Email Spam By Gary Gresham
You can stop unwanted email spam, you can choose to reduce spam email
or you can do nothing and continue to be annoyed. Those are your only
choices because spam email is not likely to go away. Every single one
of us would love to stop unwanted emails but only a very small percentage
of people do anything except complain about spam.
You might remember a couple of years ago they passed a new federal spam law
that was supposed to eliminate spam email. So why is spam still around
and why is it so difficult to get rid of it?
Email spammers buy lists of email addresses from list brokers, who compile
their lists by harvesting email addresses from the Internet. Then they send
millions of unwanted email messages to these email addresses with one
click of a mouse.
Email spammers make huge amounts of money from these lists and that's why
they do it. These email spammers are breaking the federal spam law,
The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, in every way possible.
This federal spam law, which became effective January 1, 2004, is next
to impossible to enforce. Email spammers make so much money they can
afford to outsmart The Federal Trade Commission with sophisticated technology.
Now that you know the origin of spam email and why email spammers are
sending this junk you realize that spam is not likely to ever go away.
But that doesn't mean you can't do anything about it. Here are a couple
of ways to significantly reduce spam that won't cost you a cent.
Don't display your email address in newsgroup postings, chat rooms or in
an online service's membership directory. Sometimes email spammers use these
sources to harvest email addresses.
Another thing you can do is create two email addresses with one for personal
messages and the other for public use, such as in newsgroups or chat rooms.
You can also create an account at a disposable or free email address service.
You can then have those emails forwarded to your permanent email address. If
the disposable address starts to receive spam, you can turn if off without
affecting the permanent address.
You should also create a unique email address because email spammers often use
dictionary attacks to sort through possible name combinations at some Internet
Service Providers. A common name, like johndoe or thesmiths may get more spam than
a unique name like fx721OMe9.
Check your email account to see if it provides a tool to filter out potential
spam or a way to channel spam into a bulk email folder. When you're choosing
an Internet Service Provider consider what email options they offer.
If you want to end your headaches, you can stop unwanted email spam altogether.
All it takes is installing an Internet spam filter. Most are reasonably priced
between $25 and $40 depending on where you get it.
Once you install an Internet spam filter you'll wonder why it took you so
long because it takes all of the frustration away from your email.
A good Internet spam filter will completely eliminate spam email and that
lets you take back control of your Internet message Inbox. You'll have to
find something else to get annoyed about because a good Internet spam filter
will block 100% of unwanted spam.
Internet spam filters stop unwanted email forever, and after all, isn't
that the idea?

Technology News:
Court Protects Online Journalists
A California appeals court has overturned a lower-court ruling,
saying that online journalists don't have as much protection
under the First Amendment as traditional journalists.
The case involved an action by Apple Computer to discover the
identity of individuals responsible for revealing company
secrets online. Apple had argued that the information was shared
not by legitimate reporters but by people who were violating the
company's trade secrets. The appeals court said that online
journalists are covered by a state law that guarantees the
confidentiality of journalists' sources. The three judges on the
panel said there is no reasonable method to distinguish
legitimate from illegitimate news and that First Amendment
rights trump Apple's demand to know who leaked the information.
Observers said the case could have far-reaching implications for
bloggers and others who post information and opinions online
outside the context of traditional journalism.

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity
Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential
business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting
and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel
free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to
assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you;
so email me anytime and you will receive a personal
reply from me.
And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same. EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income. The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after several years of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
