Tip of the Month
by Bob Osgoodby
Full Screen Mode
If you would like to see more web page and less web browser
toolbars, here's a little trick you'll like. Hit the F11 key. It
will put you into "full screen" mode. Hit F11 again to go back
to normal mode. This works with IE, Netscape, and Opera.
OK, I'm sure that many of you are sitting there thinking that
you know all about that one. Well, here's a bonus!
One complaint people tend to have with full screen mode is that
you don't have stuff like your address or menu bar. Well, with
Internet Explorer, you can.
Just right-click a blank area of the toolbar. A menu will pop up
that lets you add your address bar, menu bar, and any other
Explorer bars you feel the need to have.
Since it's in full screen mode, you won't be able to squeeze too
many of these extra little bars in, but at least you can get the
essentials.
The above is all well and good, but what if you want even less
Explorer toolbar at the top of your page?
While in full screen mode, simply right-click the toolbar and
select "Autohide" from the resulting menu (same one as mentioned
above). Now, when you move your mouse away, the toolbar
disappears. Move your mouse back to the top and the toolbar
re-appears.

What Every Computer Owner Should Know About Maintenance
by Peter Welch
Like cars, homes and everything else we purchase, computers require
ongoing upkeep and maintenance. Computers are complex machines, and
the more we use them, the more critical it is ensure efficient and
smooth performance. Follow these six tips to keep your computer running
well as long as possible:
1. Back-up Data.
Contrary to wishful thinking, your computer will not last forever. It has
a terminal lifespan, and crashes are not only inevitable, but common. At
any moment without notice, your hard drive could stop running, obliterating
all of your important data and files. While the best back-ups are off-site
to ensure restoration in the event of theft or natural disaster
(think Katrina victims), you should minimally back-up your files to an
external hard drive. How often do you require a back-up? Heavy users should
conduct daily back-ups, while periodic users can get away with weekly or
monthly back-ups. Similarly, heavy users should clone their entire drive,
while recreational computer users can get away with saving a second or third
copy of their documents, music, photos and other irreplaceable data.
2. Use System Utilities.
Whenever you load software or delete files, you change things on your drive.
Keep this clean and efficient by running a Disk Doctor, Disk Defrag or System
Utility on a routine basis.
3. Shut Down Properly.
Never click the power button to turn your computer off without properly shutting
down the system first.
4. Uninstall Programs.
Avoid dragging unused and unneeded programs into the trash. Instead, use the
application's uninstall option to properly erase and clean up affiliated files.
5. Block Viruses.
Invest in a reputable virus protection program and set it up to automatically
scan your system on a routine basis.
6. Assess Downloads.
If you don't know who the sender is or don't know what the file type is, don't
download it. This is applicable to all file transfers, including email, instant
messaging and web surfing. Keep in mind, viruses can initiate emails to everyone
in the victim's address book. So even if you know the sender, don't assume its
safe. A quick call to the sender can save thousands of dollars in computer damage.
While we're not all computer technicians, we should have a basic understanding of
the system we're using. Once you get the hang of it, system maintenance is as
easy as riding a bike.

The Way You Want Your Desktop
by Bob Osgoodby
Windows wants to set up your icons on the desktop the way it
wants to, and only gives you a couple of options on how it
looks. It will automatically order your icons by name, type,
size or date. If you try to move them, Windows moves them
back to where they were.
I prefer to group my icons by how they are used. My logic
is not the same as Microsoft's in this regard. Offline mail
readers is one group and web authoring tools is another. If
you keep your icons in your favorite places, it is easier to
remember where they are, and you don't have hunt all over
your desktop to find them.
To group your icons the way you want them, first right click
on any unused portion of the desktop. A "pop up" menu
appears and click on "Arrange Icons". If your icons won't
stay where you want them, "Auto Arrange" will have a check
mark next to it. Click on that and "Auto Arrange" will be
turned off.
Now you can move your icons anyplace you wish. Select an
icon and while holding down the left mouse button, drag it
to where you wish it to be, and it will stay there.
Alternatively you can do it with your right mouse button.
Drag it to where you wish it and release the button. A
small pop up menu will appear. Click on "Move Here". Using
the left mouse button saves that step.
Now you can have your desktop the way you want it.

Women in Business
Are You a Great Procrastinator?
by Sandy Karn
Are you truly a great procrastinator? If so, I have a real
challenge for you! If not, you may want to challenge a friend or
co-worker who procrastinates much more than you.
"Procrastinate" is a long word which sounds something like a
disease, suggesting that if we do procrastinate, it really isn't
our fault. It's just a result of this malady with which we were
born.
The word literally means "for tomorrow, suggesting that
procrastination means putting off until tomorrow something which
needs to be done today. Of course, if you're really a great
procrastinator, you can put things off for much longer than a
day. Nonetheless, even a process of a year or more needs to
begin with a single day.
You have undoubtedly heard all the standard approaches to
reducing or eliminating procrastination. You have probably been
nagged by parents, teachers, supervisors, friends, and many
others over the years.
You may have been sent to a training program to help you learn
effective ways to reduce procrastination by digging for the root
cause, breaking an enormous task into many small, easily
accomplished segments, rewarding yourself for getting a task
done in a timely manner, etc. You may even have tried a
program to stop procrastination using hypnosis. The possible
approaches seem endless.
If you are truly a great procrastinator, however, you have not
allowed any of these suggestions or interventions to affect you
in any way. You have steadfastly maintained, and even enhanced,
your procrastination skills over the years. No matter what the
task or situation at hand, you can find a way to procrastinate.
Well, here's your challenge!
The next time you find yourself about to procrastinate,
procrastinate on procrastinating instead. That's right, the next
time you want to put something off until tomorrow or beyond,
just go ahead with the task and put off procrastinating until
tomorrow instead. You can do it! You're a great procrastinator!
Silly as this may sound, it really works for many people. Why
not try it yourself?
Your goal:
To put off procrastinating and get things done in a timely
manner.
The result:
You will accomplish more, feel less stress and guilt, and move
more quickly toward your desired outcomes.
Your assignment:
The next time you find yourself procrastinating; decide to put
off procrastinating until the next day and go ahead with the
task at hand.

7 Things To Consider Before Joining A Network Marketing Program
by James Woolley
Network marketing programs, also commonly referred to as MLM or downline
programs, can bring huge financial rewards if marketed well. They provide
a way of working at home and building your own monthly income through your
efforts to introduce and sell the network marketing company's products or
services to other people, who then introduce them to other people, and so on.
It sounds simple enough but how do you know if a company is legitimate and
will pay you on time or even at all, and will they be around in the long term?
In this article I have listed seven factors that I personally take into
consideration before choosing to join an MLM company:
1. Are the products offered good enough to be sold on their own without
the downline incentive?
The first thing you should look at is the products or services that the
company is offering. If you don't believe they represent value for money,
or you simply aren't impressed with them, then the likelihood is that other
people won't be either. Therefore you will probably have difficulty selling
the products to other people, and so your potential profits could be limited.
2. Has the company already established itself?
It's important to find out how long the company you're considering joining
has been operating. Although there's no guarantees on whether a company will
be around in the long-term, I still favour companies that are at least a year
old. Yes some of these may subsequently go out of business at some point in
the future, but at least you know they're not a fly-by-night outfit.
3. Does the company offer a good compensation plan?
Let's be honest, this is the factor that most of us are primarily interested in.
Time is a very valuable commodity, so we don't want to spend it promoting a
network marketing company's products unless we are being well rewarded
financially for our efforts.
4. Does it offer spillover?
Spillover occurs when say for example, if the company uses a 5x5 matrix then
when you refer 6 people, the first 5 will fill the top level, and the 6th
person will go under one of your initial referrals creating an incentive for
them to continue with the program because they are benefiting from your efforts
as well as their own.
5. Does the company have a reputable owner or management team in place?
This information can be slightly difficult to find out, but in this internet
age it is becoming much easier to carry out independent research. If you can't
find sufficient information yourself you can almost guarantee that there will
be a forum somewhere which discusses the company, and where someone has already
done a background check on the owner or management team.
6. Is it strongly endorsed by other members of the company?
Forums and discussion groups are great places to obtain this information.
Although most people will obviously praise the company that they are promoting
in order to get more signups, you will inevitably find a few negative comments
from disgruntled recruiters. It's these comments that you should read carefully.
Most of the time they will be minor issues or faults, but sometimes you can come
across red flag signals such as the company suddenly starting to delay payments,
for example.
7. Does the company still have plenty of room to grow, or has it already
reached saturation point?
This is the final point I want to mention, but nevertheless a very important one.
You don't want to join a company that everyone is seemingly already a member of,
and one that is already promoted heavily. For optimum results you want a company
that has already established itself yet still has plenty of scope to grow and
attract new members, therefore being relatively easy to promote.

Wanna Go Phishin? by Bob Osgoodby
You can go fishing, or you can go phishing. In this case
spelling does count. In the first you hope to land a big one, in
the second you hope to land a really big one. Did PT Barnum have
it right, there is there a "sucker" born every minute? Or is it
the computer and the Internet that make an otherwise sane person
act like an idiot? Phishing is just another method of identity
theft, typically performed either through email or through the
creation of a Web site that appears to represent a legitimate
company.
Most people who have been on the Internet for awhile, are
becoming a little more sophisticated, and are not falling for
the traditional scams. When they get email from multiple banks,
credit unions or one from ebay stating that their account has
been compromised, they realize what is going on, and quickly hit
the delete key.
Those new to the Internet may not realize this, and do fall
victim to them. But, step back Jack. There is a whole new breed
of people trying to separate you from your money, and they are
coming up with some new wrinkles that even the more
sophisticated could easily fall prey to.
Blogging has become an institution. Some Blogs are there for one
purpose, and only one purpose - to collect email addresses of
people with like interests. The same scamsters that run the
Blog, also create a business that caters to those people.
Example - Blogs on Bush - both for and against. A popular item
among "Bush Bashers" is the Backwards Bush Desk Clock that shows
the time he has remaining in office. It retails for $18.99 plus
shipping and handling.
The phisher sends out an email berating Bush and the Republican
Party in general, and offers to give this clock away for just
the cost of shipping at $4.95 - wow what a deal you might think.
You are directed to a web site to pay with your credit card. On
the site you see a wide array of other "Anti-Bush" products for
ridiculously low prices. The site of course is a phony created
under a fictitious name (usually offshore) and has nothing to
sell.
It does have a secure web page where you can pay for your
purchase, and you receive an automatically generated email
saying your product will be delivered in 4 to 6 weeks. They of
course are hoping that you will forget that you ordered it. You
write to the email address on the web site and receive an email
saying it must have been lost in shipment, but it will be sent
again, and you should receive it in 4 to 6 weeks. They keep this
up until you give up and write off the $4.95 to experience.
But wait - the phisher has your credit card number, its' date of
expiration and the 3 digit code on the back of the card. They
keep a record of the expiration dates and shortly before the
cards' expiration date, the information is sold to various and
sundry "lowlifes" who quickly max out your card, and are never
to be seen again.
You don't realize this until you receive your next credit card
statement, or if you are denied credit. At this point, you are
facing a world of hurt. A year or so could have passed since you
tried to buy the clock, and you have probably forgotten all
about it.
The purchases made using your card are usually sent offshore. A
weeks vacation in a third world country such as Costa Rica,
where they don't require other identification can be costly.
While the fraud division of some credit card companies will
contact you if they see a large purchase, there are many who
don't, and you can bet that the phishers know the ones that
don't.
There is a bottom line here. While doing business on the
Internet is convenient and normally safe, don't be sucked into
something as the result of an unsolicited email. Before parting
with that information, be sure you have contact information with
the person or company you are buying from and check it out.
Otherwise that phisher may have just landed another "big one."

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma.
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity
Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential
business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting
and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel
free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to
assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you;
so email me anytime and you will receive a personal
reply from me.
And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same. EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income. The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after several years of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
Thank you for your interest in Modern Opportunity...
