Tip of the Month

Attachments Folder
Open Windows Explorer and check out your attachments folder
under your email folder. You might be shocked, or maybe even a
little embarrassed if other people saw what could be there.
Every time you receive an email with an attachment, even though
you delete the email, many email reader programs (clients) leave
the attachment in place.
Occasionally I get an email in Chinese or Arabic, and since I am
not conversant in those languages, I automatically delete them.
But if there is an attachment, that remains. The scamsters are
notorious for this. I have found everything from executable
files which are most likely viruses, zip files, image files that
would make a sailor blush, and html files.
You should examine this folder on a regular basis, and delete
anything you don't recognize. Not only are you removing
objectionable material from your computer, but you're also
freeing up a lot of disk space. Just make sure you don't delete
anything you wish to keep. Better yet, transfer those to another
folder and then you can simply delete the entire contents of the
folder.
More on Attachments
A number of people asked for more specific instructions regarding the
attachments you receive with your email. All email packages (Clients) are
different so I'll just cover the three most popular.
First - if you read your mail online and do not download the mail to your
computer, you do not have to be concerned.
Second - if you installed a popular email client such as Eudora, it
depends on where you installed it. If you installed it in "Program Files"
the path would be C:\Program Files\Eudora\Attach - as I said earlier, you
can safely delete all files in this folder. You may wish to keep some
however and move them to a different folder. You will most likely see
files that your anti-virus software has removed because they contained a
virus. These are clearly identifiable. These should be deleted on a
fairly regular basis because if there are too many present, and no, I
can't tell you how many is too many for your computer, it can cause your
system to do strange things. As a rule of thumb, on my system I try to
keep them under 100. I use Norton Anti-virus and if I get a rash of
removal notifications, I go to that folder and remove them.
Third - if you use Outlook Express, the path is
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Local Settings\Temp\eud1E8.htm
"Bob" in this case is the name of my local folder - yours will most
likely be something you specified. "eud1E8" is simply an example of
something to delete.

3. You must have a high quality product and/or you must believe in the product.
Whether you have created your own product, or are selling a product as an affiliate,
the product must be of high quality and you must believe in it. If you are an
affiliate, you must know the product very well, and you must be proud and passionate
about it - this is very important if you want to market the product appropriately.
If you are not proud of the product, you will not be able to promote it compellingly.
This means that you will need to be completely well informed with the details of the
product or service.
4. Your sales letter must clearly show the benefits of the product or service. To
succeed in internet marketing you need to make sales. In order for your website's
visitors to buy from you, they will need to be informed clearly how the product will
benefit them or solve a problem they may have. Your sales letter or website must
clearly emphasize the key reasons why the visitor must buy the product; and also
what they will lose if they do not buy your product.
5. You must always make your advertisements convincing. Avoid exaggerating
in your internet marketing business' ads. People generally know whether they
are being told the truth or otherwise. This is particularly important since
the internet is now full of scams. Avoid writing ads that may make people
think that your ad is one of those scams. Make sure that the approach,
language and tone is your ad is convincing. Your goal is to represent
your business as a reputable internet business that does what your ad says.
6. Develop a good reputation. A good and respected name on the internet will
make it very easy for you to build your internet marketing business. Make
sure that you keep your customers happy. If you look after them well, you
are ensuring that you get good reviews and of course repeat business. In
your internet marketing business, always make sure you deliver your promises
on time and in great quality. It is important to build relationships with
customers and also with your prospects.
7. Always go the 'extra mile' for your customers. This is related to the factor
above. In whatever you do in your internet marketing business, apply more effort
and bring in a 'personal touch'. It is very easy these days to run a 100% automated
business with the auto responders, lists and ezines among other tools. However,
whatever you do towards promoting your business or when dealing with your customers,
try to do more - which will show them that you really care about them. You will be
immensely rewarded for this - you will build a good relationship with your customers
and they will come for repeat business, and you also build trust with your
prospects and they will buy from you.
8. Be well-informed about the current and effective marketing techniques that are on
the internet. The internet is very dynamic, and you need to develop and learn accordingly
about the best strategies for building your internet marketing business. You must know
about all the tools you can use such as auto responders, mailing lists, viral marketing,
search engine optimization and paid advertising among others. You will need to master
these promotional techniques and make them very effective. These techniques all have
their advantages and disadvantages. It is also a good idea for you to consider which
selected few marketing strategies will work best for your business, budget and knowledge.
These key factors can guide towards your goal of making it BIG in internet marketing.

Guide to Protecting Your Computer from Viruses

Many people are paranoid about computer viruses and with good reason. Millions of
dollars
and hundreds of security leaks are propagated annually by these seemingly harmless codes hiding
in various forms, from emails to games to download applications. Basically, a computer virus
is a malicious program that impairs or destroys key components of your computer. Viruses are
software programs and they can do the same things as any other programs running on your computer.
The effect of a virus is dependent on what its programmer wants it to do. Some viruses damage
files or slow down your computer, or leak out confidential information. What viruses don't do
is cause physical harm to your computer (like making your monitor explode or melting your hard disk).
They can infect any file (not just the "program files"), even Word and Excel spreadsheet documents.
They can even be spread by simple JavaScript or HTML codes on any website. The code is usually in
an ".exe" form or a ".doc" file that the computer will try to open. However, a virus needs to be
"activated" to take effect, hence pure data files (like pictures, sounds, or graphics that end in
.gif or .mp3) are safe.
A virus does not target a few users alone; it aims to replicate itself by infecting key executable
files in your hard disk and sending copies of itself out to your contacts. It usually does all these
without the user's knowledge or intention. Viruses spread by infecting the programs within one
computer or infecting other computers on a network. When files containing the virus are shared,
via documents or email, the virus starts the infectious cycles all over again.
How do you protect your computer and your network from being infected? While there are no absolute
ways to totally eliminate your computer from virus attacks, there are a few sensible guidelines
that will render your computer relatively safe from these malicious codes.
First, always treat files or email with an executable code with caution. Run a virus scan on the
file first before opening the attachment or the .exe file. If you receive an unexpected executable
file via email, delete it unless you are sure of the content.
Second, disable the feature on your email that automatically opens and runs executable files
that it receives. Third, invest in good antivirus software from a reputable and well-reviewed
company. Run this regularly and update it at least twice a week because new viruses do come
out every day! If you can install a scanner software that can check for viruses every time you
start your computer, all the better. Fourth, refrain from accepting executable files and programs
from chat sessions, as most users get viruses this way. Make sure you back up your hard drive
because some viruses can completely erase these in less than a minute.
If you are really worried about traditional viruses, you may want to change your operating
system to something like UNIX. It is also best to buy software from CD's instead of downloading
them from the net, because viruses can infect CD files.

at noon, because you are so tired?
6. Are you mentally UP for the challenge?
7. Are you prepared for the risk involved?
8. Are you prepared to wait several months for your first prophet?
9. What is your reason for wanting to start a business?
10. Is your business your passion?
11. Who are your customers outside of your immediate circle of influence?
12. What are the demographics of your customer base?
13. Do you have the expertise you need in the business you want to start?
14. How are you going to sell what you have at a price that will return
an adequate profit for you?
15. Can you obtain the necessary funds you will need to start and keep the
business running without getting into a cash flow problem?
16. Do you think and plan ahead?
17. Do you have a business plan?
18. Do you know the difference between marketing, promoting and advertising?
19. Who is advising you?
20. Start writing out your plan.

12 Ideas to Help Relieve Stress

Owning your own online home business is wonderful, but if you
are like me, there are days when you get really down and
stressed and just can't seem to get going. Sometimes sitting in
your lonely home office, it seems like you are the only person
on earth. You sometimes feel like you are in a cage and there
is no way out! This can also be compounded by a slump in your
business sales or success.
When you feel like this, it is hard to get any work done and can
be very counterproductive for you. You must step back, take a
break, clear your head and get rid of the stress.
I have found a few things that can help alleviate these problems
and would like to share them with you.
1. Get up and get away from the computer for awhile. Even if it
is only for 10-15 minutes. Walk around the house, stretch your
muscles, do a few neck and back stretches. These can do
wonders!
2. Take a walk. Get dressed, go outside, breathe in the fresh,
cool air of winter and take a 30 minute walk. This is one of the
most invigorating things you can do to clear your head and get
the cobwebs out. Walking is the one activity I would recommend
most.
3. Call a friend or family member and talk for awhile. This can
also be a great way to lift your spirits and confirm your
suspicions that there are other people on this planet! Chat
for awhile and laugh a little. Laughter is a great medicine!
4. Have some fun! Put on some of your favorite music and dance
around the house for awhile. Let loose and have some fun. Act
goofy, crazy or waltz yourself to China. This helps get out
some of the frustrations and pent up emotions that can cause the
blues.
5. Just relax! Turn everything off, make yourself a cup of
coffee, cocoa, or just plain water. Just sit in complete
silence and watch the birds outside or put a cool cloth over
your eyes. Let your mind go blank for awhile. Forget
everything and just relax!
6. Exercise your mind! Show your mind that there is more than
just the computer. Do a crossword puzzle, play a few games of
solitaire, or read a book. These are all great ways of getting
your mind of business and clearing out all the old to make way
for the new.
7. Do some housework! This might not be the most fun thing to
do, but it helps take your mind of business for awhile and
believe me, after about an hour of housework, you will be more
than ready to get back to business!
8. Take a TV break! Watch a program that allows you to escape
to another world. After you are finished you just might be glad
to get back to your world!
9. One thing I do when business gets the better of me, is to
shut the computer down for the day and turn my attention to
other things that need to be done. Just taking a small break
from business can help. When things are really stressful, we may
need to take a longer break.
10. Get Some Sun - After being indoors so much, we need to get
out and get some of that sun! The sun is very good for your
mind and body. Sunshine is a very good anti-depressant! But,
do remember to wear protection so you don't get too much
exposure.
11. Enjoy Time with Your Family - Spend some time with your
family. Play a game, take a walk, watch a heart warming family
adventure movie, or just sit and talk. No matter how hard we
work, we have to make time for our family!
12. Eat Healthy Foods - This we all know of course, and it is
much easier said than done, but just try to change one meal at a
time or add one healthy food at a time. The better we feel, the
better we can handle everyday stress!
I hope some of these pointers will help you relax and get back
to business. I know that they have been a great help to me more
than once. Sometimes when you are feeling unproductive, stressed
out or just plain tired, the idea is not to work harder, but to
stop working and give your mind and/or body a well-deserved
break!

We are all aware of the home business boom, but many of us ask
ourselves what is all the hype about?! The thought of
corporation downsizing, merging and relocating truly makes the
idea a lot more digestible for many. Especially since most of
the population have no job guarantees. Your job could be gone
tomorrow in fact and your family might be in jeopardy as well as
your whole financial future. There is no doubt that we all need
to be more concerned about our future, but is home business
ownership right for you?
Being your own boss, working around your family and being in
charge of your own hours, income and holidays is an attractive
idea. Also the most appealing aspect for many is the Lifestyle
qualities we gain by running a successful home business!
However, I have learned that not everyone should run his or her
own business. How come many people running businesses are not
successful, happy or fulfilled while others absolutely love it?
The fact is that it all comes down to proper planning and having
realistic expectations! Most people drop out within their first
2 years in business, because they simply expect the impossible
to happen overnight. Did you know that most humans over-estimate
what they can achieve in the short term (1-2 years) and
under-estimate what they can achieve in the long term 5+ years?
Any proper business model does take time to build, as we have to
learn new tasks and acquire a new mindset of being self-employed
rather than showing up for a boss and getting paid. Often enough
when we grow as a business person, our business grows with us.
For many people starting their own home business is the best
decision that they will ever make. They have done their
homework, by properly researching their concept/product and have
organized financial back-up. They understand that to make money
they first have to invest into themselves and their business.
>From the time they start their business they are positioned for
success. Yet for others, the decision to become self-employed is
a complete disaster.
Statistics show that 90% of businesses cease within 10 years.
You can increase your chances of success by using an established
business model through a Franchise or Multi Level Marketing
plan. Be aware of pyramid schemes that simply don't have a
product to sell but remunerate you for recruiting only! They are
highly illegal and I suggest that if you suspect a scam then
turn toward a government body which can help you with your
research. BBB in the USA is a place where you can do some
background research on companies. For many however 'business
ownership' means more work for less pay! People who work their
business diligently will eventually prosper. "You have to sow
the seeds prior to harvesting". It's that simple!
Multi-Level-Marketing has proven to be the perfect vehicle to
allow me to be successful in my own home business. I actively
promote goal setting (both short and long term) within my team.
We then work together to formulate a plan of action for a Daily
Method of Operation (DMO) to ensure that they are undertaking
the required level of activity to the get the results they
desire. By executing that same plan for 90 days they will gain
momentum which in turn if kept up consistently will lead to
success. Regardless of whether you are in MLM or a more
traditional business, the secret to success is planning.
Planning can indeed be boring and time consuming but it is worth
every effort. As they say "Failing to plan is planning to fail".
Having said that, the best of plans will not result in success,
if you don't work the plan!
The benefits of working from home are huge and everybody's
motivation is different for choosing a home based business. But
it is not a decision to be taken lightly if you are serious
about changing your future! Before you embark on any business
venture you need to do your research, organize your finances,
plan your goals and activities, have realistic expectations and
take a good, hard look at yourself. Evaluate your strengths and
weaknesses and understand your personality type. Are you
disciplined enough to get up every day and commit to doing
whatever it takes to reach your goals? Are you willing to work
harder on yourself than you ever will on your business? Are you
willing to reinvest short term profits back into your business
in order to gain long term rewards? If you can honestly answer
YES to these questions- Congratulations you have the makings of
a successful home business owner (and I'd love to talk to you!).
If you are not quite sure - I suggest you look for an
opportunity that you can start part-time and see if you "have
what it takes" while still retaining the income of your current
job. If you answered NO to the above questions, there are
benefits to being an employee, and I suggest you "Keep your
J.O.B."!

A personal message from the publisher...
How I became a proud, single, work at home grandma. 
My name is Francine York, publisher of Modern Opportunity
Web site and newsletter. I welcome you to what is fast becoming the quintessential
business opportunity web site. Not only will you find a wide variety of interesting
and profitable opportunities; but you will find services and products as well. Feel
free to browse the site and read the many informative articles and columns geared to
assisting you in becoming a successful entrepreneur. My email "door" is always open to you;
so email me anytime and you will receive a personal
reply from me.
And now, about my background and how I came to publish this site and newsletter...
Due to budget tightening, my job at a not-for-profit agency was cut back to part time. Because I
needed more of an income, I set out looking for a new position. At about the same time, my daughter
and son-in-law gave me the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child and my first
grandchild! My joy was boundless until the reality of economics deflated my euphoria. My daughter
would have to go back to work three months after the baby was born. I started envisioning he/she
being cared for by strangers in a day care setting. Fortunately, when I had my three children, I
was able to stay at home until the youngest was in full day nursery school; but she could not
financially do the same.
EUREKA! It suddenly became crystal clear...I would stay home and care
for my grandchild. First I headed for my financial advisor to review my finances and
see if I could do this. He politely and firmly said, "Get a job, send your grandchild to day care
like so many others do; sell your house; giveaway your three dogs; and rent a small apartment, then
maybe you can afford to stay home." Needless to say, I was horrified and angry. You see, I had
recently separated from my husband of many years and could no longer rely on him to help with the
income.
The more people told me what a crazy idea this was, the more I was determined to do it!
I began looking in the classifieds for home based business opportunities. Most listings were for
opportunities for which you needed a great deal of money; and that I would not be able to run from
my home. That was not going to do. Unfortunately, at the time, I was not knowledgeable about the
myriad business opportunities available which can be operated from the home. Finally, I saw an ad
for newspaper for sale. The same week my grandson, Ethan Jacob, was born (May 11, 2002), I became
the new owner of a business opportunity newspaper. Since I knew the impact the Internet has on today's
existence, I immediately started designing a web site. Today, after several years of changes, improvements,
redesign and hard work, the site has grown to over seventy-five pages with more on the way.
I am a proud, single, work at home grandma now; and loving every minute of it!...and guess what?
On March 18, 2004, I became a grandma for the second time...Ryan Caleb!
To give readers, some info about my educational background...I graduated from
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in the field of education.
I spent the next four years teaching in a N.Y.C. public junior high school. Coming next was a move
to the "burbs" in 1973 followed by the birth of my third child. When he turned four, I returned to
teaching in a Brooklyn High School. The commute, the conditions and having a mother who was quite ill
caused me to rethink the teaching profession. I decided that I needed a change, a challenge
and to be closer to home. My next venture was opening a retail business...a Hallmark card and
gift store on Long Island. Fifteen successful years later, that was sold. Not at all ready to
sit idly by and watch the world pass me, I sought a new focus. I found a job working for a small
marketing company. Since writing was always my hobby-I have been published several times-I was
able to write copy, marketing plans, radio commercials and the like. It was during that time,
after many years of marriage, that my husband and I decided to separate. The week after my
daughter was married, 8/13/00, I lost my job. Luckily, I was hired to do public relations,
write press releases, oversee the computer program, assist with development, etc. for the
not-for-profit agency at which I had been volunteering as a crisis counselor since 1995.
My story comes full circle... I am a very happy
stay at home, single grandma whose mission is to offer money-making opportunities, services,
products and essential information so others who desire, or need to, will be empowered and
able to stay at home; and they will be able to find all the resources necessary to do just
that right here...so, WELCOME and much success in your endeavors!
