Marketing Myths About Women by Kevin Nunley

We have long known that women determine how up to 80 percent of a
family's income is spent. That means trillions of dollars in
sales for companies each year.

Here are 3 myths about women that you should consider when
marketing your business:

1) Women won't buy based on relationship alone. Not true. Women
frequently choose products or services because the company favors
the environment, contributes to community programs, or deals
fairly with disadvantaged nations or groups.

2) Woman like to shop. Not necessarily. Studies show more than
half of women say shopping is a chore they would rather skip.
Don't expect to increase sales by making the shopping experience
longer or more involved.

3) Woman don't start businesses. That myth becomes more wrong
each year. Woman now start new companies twice as often as men.
Companies owned by women employ more people than the 500 biggest
corporations in America.

Good News For Women Entrepreneurs
By: Karen Kerrigan

On Wednesday, May 28, I joined President Bush for a bill signing
ceremony in the East Room at the White House. The President signed
a $350 billion economic package, which includes substantive measures
to help women entrepreneurs. The passage and signing of the package
come at an ideal time. With optimism increasing among businesses,
consumers and investors the package will help fuel confidence and momentum.

In a statement released by WE Inc. at the end of last week hailing
the passage of the legislation by Congress, I commented, "The tax
relief and expensing improvements of the economic package passed by
Congress will truly help fuel the growth of women business owners across
the country. Increased business investment is key to our nation's
economic strength, and we are pleased that the legislation will help
women entrepreneurs from the start-up stage to those on a high-growth
path." You can read the full releaseClick Here

In 2003, 91 million taxpayers will receive, on average, a tax cut of
$1,126 under the Jobs and Growth Act of 2003, according to the White House. In addition:

• 68 million women will see their taxes decline, on average, by $1,338.

• 45 million married couples will receive average tax cuts of $1,786.

• 34 million families with children will benefit from an average tax cut of $1,549.

• 6 million single women with children will receive an average tax cut of $558.

• 12 million elderly taxpayers will receive an average tax cut of $1,401.

• 23 million small business owners will receive tax cuts averaging $2,209.

• 3 million individuals and families will have their income tax liability
completely eliminated by the Act.

It was an honor to be a part of this important ceremony. President Bush
and members of Congress on both sides of the political aisle who helped
massage the final package were focused on passing meaningful legislation to
help our economy -- despite the war overseas and the ongoing challenges
defending the homeland. We Inc. will thank them all in the coming week.

It's back to work, however, on other critical areas of the agenda - namely,
the spiraling costs of health insurance and the need for Congress to put reform
on a legislative fast track. I firmly believe that getting health insurance
costs under control is key to economic recovery and robust growth in the future.

Women in Business

A magnifying glass makes something look larger than it really
is. It makes it easier to see the finer details, however it also
distorts the image, especially toward the periphery.

Almost any child knows that it can concentrate a beam of
sunlight enough to start a fire. A true mirror reflects back an
exact image of what is in front of it, without distortions. It
is possible to produce curved mirrors that do distort the image.

Whenever we interact with another person, we have a choice as to
which of these tools we will use. Most people tend to pick the
magnifying glass. We look very carefully at everything the other
person has done in great detail, magnifying every misstep they
may have made. Many times we concentrate our attention
sufficiently to ensure a fiery confrontation.

On the other hand, when we look at our own behavior we tend to
use a mirror, a distorted mirror, that reduces or eliminates any
of our own missteps.

You can easily observe this tendency in almost any conflict
situation, whether it is a personal conflict in your own life or
a conflict in the news between opposing sides of an issue or
between nations. Each side is an expert on the harmful actions
taken by the other side. They can document every incident and
offer the most negative possible interpretation of it. They tend
not to see or to minimize the significance of their own actions.
This results in a distorted view of the situation and results in
maintaining or intensifying the conflict.

A solution is obvious. We need to change our choice of tools.
Ideally we would always use a true mirror to view our own
actions so that we will be actively aware of everything we did,
both positive and negative, and the impact those actions had on
others. At the same time, we need to observe the actions of the
other person or group through a clear lens that does not magnify
or distort.

If we really want to resolve the issue, we may choose to look at
the actions of the other side through a lens that somewhat
reduces their missteps, making it that much easier to reach a
solution.

Your goal:

To avoid magnifying the missteps of others while honestly acknowledging your own actions in any conflict situation.

The result:

You will find it much easier to resolve (or even avoid)
conflicts, resulting in much less energy wasted on emotions and
attacks. You will be free to direct all that energy toward
making progress toward your objectives.

Your assignment:

When you find yourself in a conflict with someone, make sure you
are not using a magnifying glass to examine the other person's
behavior. Use a true mirror to observe your own behavior and a
clear lens to observe the behavior of the other person. If
necessary, minimize the other person's actions a bit, to enhance
the resolution of the conflict.
