Why Does My Business Need a Website?
by Stephanie Foster
It almost seems to be a must now - the business website. From
huge corporations to brand-new businesses, whether you are in
sales or service, you've thought about getting a website. But
what good does it really do your business? What if you are purely
local?
Having a website shows that you are committed to your business
and being competitive. If you are local, say so on your website.
You will still reach more of your local community through your
website than through many other media. A website is a great
addition to all your marketing materials, from business cards to
television commercials.
A website can be a very inexpensive form of advertising. You can
offer your audience much more information about your products or
services on a website than in any other form of advertising, and
it can be changed at a moment's notice. Just think about how much
work it takes to make one small change in a regular advertising
campaign. There's the time to create the new campaign, produce it
and get it out to the consumer. With a website, you can make
small or large changes very quickly.
Although website hosting can be had for free, such sites tend to
look unprofessional, as the hosting company places banners or
other advertising on your site. Depending on your needs however,
a site can be hosted for very little money, often for less than
$15 a month.
Design is where many websites spend the most money. Unless you
already know how to create a logo and other graphics and can use
a good webpage editor, you will want to pay a web designer to do
the work for you. Even if you can do it yourself, you need to ask
yourself - is it worth the time and effort you will put into it?
Calculate what your time is worth and estimate how long it will
take you to create a site. Then get an estimate from a
professional designer. It might just cost less than doing it
yourself would.
Just remember, you can start out with a small website and let it
grow with your business. You might just be surprised at how well
you do.

TAKE CHARGE LADIES! by Irene Segal,
Financial Consultant, Investors Group, Regional Office
Good news: More and more women are achieving financial success.
US statistics: 90% of all women with either never marry, become widowed or get divorced.
Reality check: At some point in almost every woman's life, she will make financial decisions on her own. Start taking control of your life so that your life does not control you.
Do It Now:
A) Get in Control of Your Finances by finding a professional financial advisor/planner whom you trust, and feel comfortable with. Work with this individual to accomplish a road map for financial security.
B) Seven Steps to a Solid Financial Roadmap/Plan:
Define your objectives including short and long term goals.
Take a good look at your assets and liabilities to determine your present net worth. Let your advisor know what is important to you and what is not, work with your advisor to determine your risk tolerance and time horizons.
Analyze how you spend your money and the cash flow that you need.
Make sure that you have a valid will which reflects your current wishes and your personal situation.
Review your life insurance, disability insurance and other insurances such as medical, critical illness, long term illness.
If you do not have a retirement plan in place you should. It is a critical component of your financial plan.
Develop and investment strategy that reflects your needs, objective, risk tolerance and time horizon. Putting your income into low yielding GICs or money market funds is a resting place for dollars you expect to need in the short term but it is not an investment strategy.
Proper allocation of your assets is the way to help you maximize your Potential returns while reducing risks.

Counseling and Coaching
by Gayle Carson
The difference between coaching and counseling is, coaching
is more about teaching. Counseling is conferring with, having
a conversation with someone, often in order to find out why
the activity that you want done is not being accomplished.
Coaching is teaching someone how to do a task. Counseling is
conferring with someone to make them understand what the
results will be if they continue to do things improperly, and to
make them and yourself aware of what the problems are. In this
situation, you have to check for progress.
Counseling is a complete system, it means two or three or
four sessions. If you're not going to have the time to counsel,
you're not going to be an effective manager. Everyone has
their "hot" button, and it's your job to find out what that is.
It might also be growth, education, benefits, location,
recognition or challenge. Again, since everyone is an
individual, it is difficult to keep track of what turns each
person on.
But the most effective coaches do it, and so can you. They
know who to pat on the back, who to criticize, and who to leave
alone. The trick is to remember that all the different
personalities you have working for you are just like that team.
Your job is to get them working toward a common goal.
You must give primary consideration to setting those goals.
Are they clear in your mind? Are they worth striving for? Are
they dollar-driven or do they involve a greater good? Perhaps
most importantly, were they determined as a team-for the
betterment of the organization and everyone in it, or were they
set by a single individual and passed down as a commandment
to be accomplished with no questions asked, or else?
Certainly we know when we're hired to do a job that there are
certain obligations we need to perform. However, are we
motivated to go the extra distance that makes the difference
between mediocrity and excellence? The answers lie in our
own motivation which very often comes down to these three
types:
1. Fear. Temporary and builds a great deal of resentment. It's
getting harder and harder to influence people this way today,
because the younger population has no fear.
2. Incentives. Also temporary but can be effective for short-
term projects and can also stir up enthusiasm.
3. Self. The strongest of the three. We are our own best
monitors and role models. Pride in our work and performance
is the strongest report card we have.
How likely are you to "stay at the top" once you get there?
Take this quick assessment to find out.
